Freesat question

We currently have a Sky+ box and sky connection, however we're at the end of the contract and we don't watch it as much as we thought we would, and the stuff we do watch tends to be standard digi TV stuff anyway.

So:

1) If we cancel with Sky, will the signal be completely blcoked, or will we still receive the basic chanels? Or do they do some sort of one off purchase for their version of freesat?

2) Can I just get a freesat viewing card and put it in the front of the Sky box?

3) Do I have to buy a freesat specific freesat box which connects to the sky dish using the existing cable? Or does it need new stuff?
