from 40mm to 60mm, should i do it?

  F56 MINI Cooper S
Currently have my clio lowered 40mm on apex springs, but would like it slightly lower so am thinking about buying some 60mm apex springs. Not sure whether to do it though as i've heard it will be a lot more bumpier. Also, i will be running them on standard shocks, will this be ok? Will it be worth it, and will you be able to notice the drop?

Heres a pic currently lowered 40mm

I would spend the money on colour coding myself, Though if your happy with the look and want to go lower then do it.
wanted to colour code but have just been having silly quotes so going to give that a miss now

Personally I don't see the need for colour coding, obviously the bumpers would look better, but with your black wheels it gives off a good mixture.

if you run 60mm springs onstandrd shocks then after a couple of months you will need new shocks. best advise i can give you is to get coilovers mate. will be worth it in the long run.

I've heard about this, but then i hear other people have been running std shocks for 1,2 years etc with no problems. Luck of the draw do you think?

wellyeh but if shocks failed then you would be about 80 for new shocks and about 80 at least to get them changed. i would buy peace of mind tbh as there is no guarentee how long they will last.

well it will be very bouncy and you will especially notice this when you go over speedbumps. secondly if you look at the shocks you will see that they are leaking and will fail its mot for that

they are black metal things that extend from the top mounts down to the front hub and they contain the springs on the front. if you look under your front arch above the tyres you can see the springs and the springs sit on the shocks. if they were to leak you would see fluid which is yellowish dribbling down the shock. im sure there are pics on here if you search for them.

thing is the kit costs £280 plus fitting, will add up to about £350 just for an extra 20mm drop, is it worth it!

Don't do it. I have 60mm, but wish I had got 40mm instead. It's too low and every speed hump is a major obsticle that wants to rip off your splitter. Just stay with 40mm. Trust me!!

40 is very boring and you will eventually feel that 60 isnt low enough. 60 is certainly not too low for normal roads unless you had a huge splitter. there are people here that are 70-80mm on the front and they manage to drive fine on roads. again jordi i can only say that the most cost effective lowering method is coilovers. you can go as low or as high as you like and when you decide to return the car back to standard you can easily sell them on. thats how i look at it anyway.

havnt really got the money for coilovers at the mo as i have to pay for a holiday for september.

If i went down that route in the future, how much are coillys and how much am i looking at for fitting?

Personally I think 40 looks alright and as you said yourself 300 and odd quid for an extra 20mm isn't worth it.

there is a group buy at the moment for £304 inlucin vat and postage which is very cheap considering you will be saving £100 on their retailing price in the group buy. as for fitting if you have little knowlege of cars then fitting them is really easy. pretty much undo 6 bolts and bolt the coilovers back in using the same 6 bolts, however you will need to get the camber adjusted(£20-30 usually). however if you are not confident fitting them then most garages will charge you about £20 a corner.

Sorry, have to disagree. 60mm is too low on the majority of roads, ramps in multistorey car parks, speed bumps etc. My sills are a testament to that. If it was not to low then why would I lose the standard splitter and have multiple dents in the sills where the car lands down on speed humps after the front wheel goes over them. (and I am only doing about 5-10 mph over them) I agree that there are loads of people on here that do have cars lowered more than 60mm on coilovers and they are the much better option.

In my experience don't go for 60mm, although mine is lowered with a full kit, I would imagine the ride height would be the same as just having 60mm springs and it is impractical. I had 15" alloys and they constantly rubbed, so bought 4 new tyres that were lower profile to stop this, that worked well, but the tyres were £240.

totally understand your point mate but i just realised that you said you had 15" wheels which is probably why you struggle to go over speedbumps. he has 16" wheels which means even if he had his lowered 60 it would be an inch higher than your which would probably give it adequate clearance

how big are the bumps n what splitter do you have :S i was 70ish on the front (with wider wheels, no rubbing) on coilovers n i had 10mm clearence for some massive bumps n mine wasnt low enough for me

Just standard sized humps for the South West. Splitter was the standard Rubber Clio splitter, has been replaced with the Meggy one now and that keeps on getting scuffed, should stay on until I can get the standard suspension put back on, hopefully next week. As Frosty said it may be due to the size of the wheels. Mine are 15" with a lower profile tyre to avoid arch rubbing
