Front Brake Disc Removal

  Clio
Hi All
Firstly appologies for yet another brake question, but i have tried searching and cant for the life of me find an answer!

I am just changing the front pads/discs on a 2005 Clio (the one before the newest shape). I have both calipers off no problem........but the discs, god they wont shift:mad:, no matter how hard i hit it.

I have undone the two torx screws, the only thing left that could be holding them on is the big nut through the centre (30mm i think)......or rust as 3 years old and 30,000 miles

Any help would be great as its currently up on jacks!!

Does the big nut hold it on or do you think its just rusted solid??

Thanks
Simon

They're just rusted on, the centre nut (which holds the hub on) does not need to be removed.
Try hitting them from the rear rotating the disc slightly everytime, working your way round the full disc.

Failing that, heat them up a bit!

Thanks guys, i have tried hitting them both but to no avail. I'll try a little heat, what do you suggest a blow torch or by any chance would a heat gun do it enough?

Heat gun is probably safer, however I didn't need either method so couldn't really say.

I took a 2lb lump hammer to mine and they just dropped off!

Evening All

Well tried the heat gun but no chance it was ever going to get hot enough to expand it, might have to purchase a small blow torch tomorrow. have soaked it in WD40 in the hope that overnight it may help a bit, so will try again tomorrow evening......

Any other suggestions are always welcome..................including my favorite........take it to a garage!!

Thanks
Simon

whack it, you'll have to go some to bend a hub.

try changing them on mondeos that have never seen discs before.

i've done hundreds and only once have i had to resort to cutting it with an angle grinder and split it with an airchisel.

dont be shy and give it some

oh, and ive NEVER EVER took heat to a disc before and i wouldnt reccomend it....

whack it harder it will come off.

short of that, get a cutting disc on a grinder and cut straight up the face of the disc (the bit the pad rubs on) all the way up to where the face the wheel bolts to is,, do it inline with a wheel stud.

then you want a nice big chisel something you can wedge in the cut you've just made.

depending on how hammer shy you are one whack and it will crack straight down the middle

tbh on an 05 plate car theres no way you need to do that

get it hit with the biggest hammer you can get your hands on !! it will come off iv'e only had one disc shatter on me and that was a merc a class disc !!! dont be scared of it !!!!

lol i have taken a chunk out of a mondeo disc with a club hammer in the past.
bastad still didnt come off - thats when they angle grinder came out.

that was an N plate car though!

Don't be afraid to hit it! The only thing u may damage is the disc, and sure ur binning them anyways!

Like the man says , whack the bugger hard with a BIG hammer , if you can get your hands on a gear puller that would help as well .

So it seems i best get down the gym and then get myself a sledge hammer or the likes....!!

Just a bit worried that hitting it too hard is going to knacker the bearings etc.......then the whole idea of saving money is down the pan!!

Hepefully the WD40 will have worked a dream and they'll slide off like a knife through butter tomorrow:mad:

Don't hold your breath , lol . More than likely you'll still need a big hammer ;)

i struggled to get the rears off mine. Whacking and whacking with hammer. It made it a bit easier putting a shank of 2 by 4 against the back of the disc and then whacking that with a hammer, turning the disc a bit at a time. I must say my prime motive for the shank of wood was the noise!
