Front wheels spin freely when jacked up

This is almost certainly a daft question, but I’m going to ask it anyway.

When my car is in gear the front wheels couldn’t spin when one side was jacked up. Now both sides are jacked up they spin, even in gear. Is that normal or have I knocked something out?

Your wheels are spinning the gearbox because there's no resistance.
