Fucked off with my iMac already...

  Clio 182
screen froze tonight, did a shut down and restart, got some bloody flashing question mark, read the whole book, texted a Mac 'expert' (ta for your patience!) went through all the trouble shooting, nothing worked, tried to reinstall OS X and wouldn't reinstall. Really really fucked off and Apple don't even have 24 hour support.

Am back on the broken laptop at the mo as the screen has made a random reappearance...

Apple kit is pretty w**k tbh... I have worked in cross platform environments for nearly 8 years now, 2 years on just apple (before I introduced the windows boxes).

They look pretty, but that is about it.

People bang on about how good mac's are compared to windows machines but you never hear the bad expieriences like yours!

I must admit I did snigger (sorry)

Let us know what the problem was when you get it sorted! :)

Which Mac did you get in the end, one of the new intel processor imacs?

Been using Macs now for donkeys years and I have only had a major problem once which was down on a hard disc drive problem that could have happened in any machine.

No problems with mine. It's bound to be something daft that easily sorted, call the help/techline and im sure it'll be resolved in no time.

  cock mobile.
Is it a G4 / G5 or a new Intel one?

Intel in Mac.... that'll be your problem probably :(

I love my iBook, never had any problems with it, and yer it does look pretty, haha.

Isn't that brand new Karen? :( Thats s**t. Hope ya get it sorted soon. If it was a Windows problem I'd be able to help. Sorrrrrrrrrrrrry. :(

Re: f**ked off with my iMac already...

Yep it is just under 3 weeks old, a new intel iMac. Made 3 calls to Apple this morning, the first for 45 mins and they tried everything but it seems the hard drive has failed. They suggested taking it to a local repair centre for repair. Rang the repair centres and they would take a week to test it and another week to get the parts in. Rang back (another 15 mins) to say it was a f**king joke basically and apart from time off work, cost, hassle, I wasn't happy with a new product having to take 2 weeks to be repaired. No joy. Rang customer services again (15-30 mins this time?) and asked to go higher, they refused initially but i went on and on and im not in the best of moods today anyway. Finally demanded a replacement - BUT they only do replacements within the first 14 days so be warned!!!!! Anyway going higher, finally they relented and a new one is being shipped asap.

Means I've lost some photos, everything id put on itunes and im just totally totally fucked off!

Unlucky, but a hard disc failure could happen on anything!

w*nk in what way? I've never had a problem with any of the mac's I've owned - desktop or laptop.

They look pretty and they do everything that I want them to do, and they do a hell of a lot more out of the box than any windows installation does!

Only time I've ever seen OS X crash (as in panic) was when I was writing a device driver.

At least there shipping you a new one Karen.

As said hard drive failure can happen on any machine. It could have failed months or years later with a chance of losing more stuff.

Must admit I wondered what teething problems these new intel macs may have, still as soon as I get a shipping date for the Macbook Pro I will end up with one I expect - a first version of a machine that everyone is advising me not to get until Rev B comes out!

sad to hear that, ive had my ibook for a year now and im gonna get an intel imac in april, and i can say im not put off at all by your problems, you guys can slate macs but they are alot more stable than any windows machine, only difference is when someone rarely complains about a mac people go nuts, however when pc's go wrong (all the time) noone says anything

Just sounds like bad luck. Every manufacturer without fail has some failures/faults with their products even if its only 1 in 10,000 there's still a chance. It's a pain but just chalk it up to bad luck and be glad they are sending a new one out promptly.

Re: f**ked off with my iMac already...

Yeah but it took a lot of hard work on the phone to get them to agree to a new one... that was what shocked me most I think. My phone also failed this week too, I just seem to be having a bad week for technology!!!

Oh f**king hell, I've just remembered a couple of hundred photos were loaded on there, I have copies but there are all my webcam stills and a load of topless stuff :S

If Windows was supplied on a standard box with a standard set of hardware provided by Microsoft it would be as stable if not more.

The majority of Windows crashes are not the fault of Windows. They are down to poorly written drivers stamping all over parts of the O/S they shouldn't be. The fact that Mac's aren't as configurable as PC's is the main reason they don't crash.

I guess they are taking the old machine back? Tell them you want the data recovered!

Praise be! The Reverand has seen the light! All that extra money you spend on pulsing standby lights and gimmicky app launchers at the bottom of the screen doesn't mean diddly-squat when the brown stuff hits the fan.

I've purposely kept my Mac time to a minimum for this type of reason alone. PCs and Windows-based servers are bad enough when they get arsey, but Macs are just a black-art. Maybe if you placed it on the floor in the middle of a pentagram and sacrificed a chicken over it, the iMac may come back to life? ;)

I didn't mention anything about the stabilty of windows! :S

Only that I'd never seen OS X panic under normal circumstances, most mac haters seem to bring up OS crashes as part of their "vendetta", things have moved on since pre OS X.... That was what I was trying to say!

I don't see why windows would be anymore stable than OS X if only configured for a "standard set" of hardware. My guess would be that it'd be the other way, what with the kernel of OS X being open source and all.

You can plug other PCI cards in the mac, I've used graphics cards and sound cards from my PC without problem.

I've written device drivers for both PC (wdm & vdd's for a 16 bit dos app) and OS X and applications for both (large commerical application on windows), OS X has such a better implementation than Microsoft could ever hope to achieve!

Microsoft don't appear to have a clear strategy anymore for windows development. .Net (which appears to be their current favourite flavour of the day) sucks for any computationally intensive application.

MFC sucked, COM sucked, DCOM sucked, .NET sucks harder. ;)

Re: f**ked off with my iMac already...

Quality of the newer hardware is very flaky. I had a customer that ordered 12 Xserve boxes. 2 months later 10 had failed. That just does not happen if in wintel land.

I've seen OSX poop itself on many occasions, the twirly lolly pop thing was a regular sight until it had been patched a good few times.

I still feel insulted using it. It's too tomy for my liking.

look nice though, and they do bring new technologies to the table, shame they are usually too new and too flaky for general consumer use.

Can't really comment on Xserves, not been near any of those!

Not had a problem with any of my G4's, neither have friends with mac's either.

Posix is too tomy for you  ;) (I know what you're referring too though, but XP's still as much "Windows for kiddies" as OS X is!)

I love the interface, I love the fact that it hides posix away from the average user, I love the fact that it's all there if I want to play.

Each to their own and all that though.

Not so good on that front then.

Nope, I'd never bargained for something like that to happen. Not so much that I've lost stuff as that is minor and nothing worth worrying over, it's more the fact i've stuff id rather wasnt on there when it went back. I suppose I should also be investing in something to back my hard drive onto now...

Don't worry about it. If the drive is dead it'll get binned. It's not worth their time repairing it (the hard drive that is). The machine will get a new one and go back for sale in the refurb section of the store.

If the drive is ok and they get the machine to boot it will just get wiped and re-installed. Having worked for computer companies dealing with returned machines and parts I can safely say they have better things to do than examine every drive that comes in on the offchance there is something interesting on it.

On G4 or G5 Apple Mac Desktop. open the side and take the drive out, 5 min job on one. A bit harder on an imac.

As Red Cup says, Apple wont be bothered in the drive if it is dead they will bin it.

If it was going to Apple Centre to be repaired and returned it may have been diffrent. That said my hard drive failed last year and they returned it with the all the data on, I was quite shocked!
