Full empty hard drive

  850 T5. mmmm Turbo!
my harddrive shows .9gb free space but i have only got
3-4 games and a few songs on here which shouldnt take up 40gb.

i have had trouble in the past with my laptop and xp has been installed 3 times on it, is there a way to find out if this is still there or if there is old data in a different partition i can delete or retreve?

Yes, presuming xp, go to control panel and select Administrative tools, then select computer management, then select disk management, you should there find all your drives partitions listed, its possible that you have an unassigned partition thats eating part of your drive space.

Actually i've thought some more about this, some manufacturers partition off a chunk of your hard drive for xp recovery, i know the missus's Hp is like that, could be that?

most likely your problem is to do with the paritions as mentioned above, but if you want to check if you have multiple copies of the operating system installed you can go to - Start > control panel > system > advanced tab > click settings under 'startup and recovery' > then check their is only 1 operating system listed in the drop down box at the top. If there is only 1, you only have 1 OS installed.
