Games - Vista or 7

In the next few days I'm going to be doing a fresh install on the games machine. I already have Vista Ultimate 64, but was wondering whether or not it's worth buying 7. The machine is almost exclusively used for gaming, so I'm not overly fussed about functionality, as I use a Mac for my every day computing anyway. That said, nice graphics is always good :)

Opinions from gamers - would you bother spending the coin on 7? Have you noticed any tangible performance gains?

Go.

I have read quite a few comparisons on Frame rates and yes Windows 7 was faster but by such a tiny amount 119 FPS compared to 117 FPS that its barely worth it.

That said I am rolling with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit as its a more stable platform than Vista and vista was poor in a number of other ways.

As an aside, I'm hoping I'd then be able to use my existing Vista 64 to bootcamp the MBP and play games on the move.

Windows 7 64-bit.......... 1,000% over Vista 64. At one point I had 10 games installed (on a fresh install of Vista). 7 failed to launch, or crashed a short while after using them, 2 I had to alter in some shape or form to work ok, and 1 worked perfectly.

Since installing Windows 7 64-bit since its release date, I have had just one game issue - which involved rem'ing out a line in the UT3.ini file. Took 2 seconds to do and hey presto, works like a charm.

Vista is just shat to me. It's the donkey-sack that swings between XP and 7 and in years to come will be as fondly remembered as being on par with the donkey sack that was Windows ME. Swinging uselessly between the chairs of both Win 98SE and XP.

Did I say Vista was shat, btw?

Win7 64 ftw.

IMO its better than OSX.

Put that in your pipe Mr Mac fanboys...;) (and thats coming from someone who has used linux solidly at home for the last 4 years!)

That is so very true, 7 all day long, just better in every way.

I'm going to Hell, though.

Better start backing up my save games in preparation. The machine definitely needs a fresh install anyway, and I'm quite looking forward to trying out 7 and seeing how I think it compares to OSX.

Haha before I read this I thought of ME! Vista = Ball sack. I need to upgrade to 7 on this machine at home.

What happened to your new build Roy?

Postponed. Most of the games out now are not seriously taxing modern hardware. The current machine runs everything at a million frames per second, and not many games, with the exception of Crysis, can scale high enough to trouble it.

When everything I have runs at stupid fps, upgrading is pointless.

Fair comment. Mine will be 12months old come March, not used it nearly enough as I would liked to have done.

Will get some titles installed me thinks :)

Do it and enjoy it. Whilst the current crop of games look and play great, they look like PC games in 2006 with a few extras. That's because they're being held back by consoles.

6 years ago, the latest CoD game would have been pushing PCs. Now, It's just a console game that will make a PC like yours just do a 'Neo' on it. One hand on the wheel. Visually I'm massively disappointed with MW2, for example.

I love you.

Indeed they do, sugar tits. They also have some part to play in the slowing development of thuper hardcore PC graphics recently.

Uber PC's are for fags thats why ;)

In all honesty I just do not have the time to fiddle around with an Uber beast anymore. Between work, shooting, bikes and wedding I just do not have the time. Quick pick up and play on the sex box does me fine!

That's why they are so popular. They are the gaming equivalent of McDonalds and KFC. A quick fix to an immediate hunger pang.

I did think when I read that, that you had owned yourself.

Thanks for the offer but I don't mind paying for things I want TBH.
