gear box oil!

ok this may seem like a stupid question doing an oil change on my valver and thought id top the gear oil up while im there.... So i have the car on level ground and undoo the white plastic filler car and oil comes pissing out allover me!
I thought that the oil was only ment to be filled up to the filler hole?
Have i missed something out?

any help will be good thanx.
