Gear Box Probs!

Im sure my car shouldnt be doing this, mid 2001 Mk2 with 22k miles..

The last week my gearbox has been a real b*****d on occasion, usually from 5th Ill be pulling up and dropping to 4th but the lever wont go down from neutral - cant move the stick into position! OR it goes into 2nd which causes screamingly high revs and probably harming the engine, it just doesnt go into the gears Im expecting except 2nd and 5th.

Although more common with changing down its also becoming less happy changing up with similar probs.

I thought maybe the box or clutch might be getting too hot, but Ive not really any experience with this sort of thing (prefer to work on the ICE lol)

My concern is that until I can get it checked over that the sudden revs are gonna damage things, but theres no way of knowing when itll happen

Seriously considered getting pulling over and getting it towed back on the way home from work tonight grrr

Anyone got any thoughts on what might be causing this and anything I can in the meantime?

i had a similar problem on mine it was a real bast*rd to get it to go into 1st and second when approaching junctions i had the gearbox oil changed for semi synthetic stuff under warranty and this has cured it (touch wood) so far

might be worth a try for only small change see if it works
