Gear change is difficult on a 172!!!

Help me! I am still trying to get answers why with my new 172 it is difficult to change gears above 5500 RPM????!!!! (Car has travelled 2000 miles)

I had that, just keep ragging it, it will loosen up! Mine would absolutley refuse to come out of first and go into second at those RPMs. Causes a few problems when youre no longer able to quickly dart infront of the car you were hoping to.... not only that, it makes you feel about this big -> .

yeah mine stuck in 2nd for a while usually when i was racing some one

Nearly had a curpra r hit the back of me when i hit the limiter trying to wrench it out of gear

Why not try getting some redline gearbox oil. Seen posts about MX5 owners swearing by it as it cures a second gear problem on their cars. Might work but then whatever oil is being used should be synthetic anyway and last ages.

Just a thought.

Spookily enough I was just literally about to post the same problem. I have covered just over 1K & if you boot it in 2nd it sticks until the revs drop!!! I hope it loosens up else yet another trip to the dealer!!

my gear change is smooth as silk, we had a 53 reg dynamique tho the other day from renno and the change on that was proper lumpy custard stylee

  Embarrassed to say

Not sure if this is relevent. But the gearstick when selected on my cup moves about a fair bit is that normal.

The gearstick in my cup moves a fair bit too, but that is because of the engine layout - basically the engine twists on its rubber mountings on power and this is transmitted back through the linkage- When it moves a lot, the engine mountings are shot.

Im sure theres a technical note out about a problem with gear changes.. i think it might only have been in reference to engaging reverse gear but i aint too sure.

I had a full set of tech. notes but binned em once i got my williams... sorry all

mine stuck in second at high revs twice when i got it new, this was the first time id given it a boot and was at 1000 miles, now im on 2200 miles it seems to have gone. Was waiting to see if it stopped before going to renault but seems ok now.

Mine did this too, Just show em whos boss, rip the stick outta gear and chuck it in the next. Shell soon learn...

Yeah its definitely a habbit youll want to get her out of! Damn dangerous at times. It kept happening to me as I ragged it away from the toll booths at the dartford tunnel.

2-3rd doesnt happen when im ragging it. I moaned at the dealer when it had its first service and they drained some oil out of the gearbox since it was too full.

It was a little better for a while but now its back to the same as before.

So the next item on the Cup shopping list is the quickshift from K- tec. Hopefully thatll help.

I have this problem too....though it seems to be getting better 4700 miles.

I think its the clutch not disengageing at high rpm when u go to change, cos the car slows as though the clutch pedal had not been pressed.

that what mine does anyway.
