gear lever light and car keeps dieing HELP!

  182
Right fitted a new gearbox at the week along with a new clutch. Car seemed to drive fine goes through all the gears and clutch feels good. I got it finished wednesday and took it for a spin yesterday all was fine for about half hour then it started playing up when it was at high revs (above 3.5k). It was kinda kangerooing and briefly dieing before picking up again. Wilst it was doing this the green gearknob light was flashing. Well eventually it quit completely! After about twenty mins it started again so i drove very carefully home.

Took it out today and it started again so drove it really slowly home. As i was entering are street i went over a speed bump and it quit again. just add that when it cuts out it wont even turn over.

Could any possibly tell me what this could be? Any help would be great.

Cheers Ed.

I know this is a longshot but check your breather system. I had the same trouble, turned out to be the breather plate (situated on top of the rocker cover) had snapped. The mechanic who'd resealed it for me (as it was leaking oil) had forgot to put the leftmost bolt back in. Had to wait for one to come up on eBay cos Renault wanted £120 for the part!

I couldn't find any other posts on the forum where this had happened to anyone else so that could be why you've had no replies

Hope this helps

Never seen this one before myself... I'd guess its more likely to be something you've not connected back up properly.

Are there any earth mounts on these gearboxes?

I recall missing or poor earth cables on the older hondas causing havoc

Just a thought

Yeh there was two earths on the box a big flat copper one and a smaller cable aswell. Car is now at a garage so hopefully they can sort it out although it wouldnt communicate with there scanner! They have also said that it must be loose cable/connection like mike suggested. Hopefully ill here something tuesday.

my guess is
TDC sensor at top of gearbox loose or disconnected? if you did the gearbox you'll know what im on about. if you didnt, that'll prob be the culprit.
the green gearstick? light is an over-rev light isnt it.?
kind of saying change gear your ragging me :race:
So im guessing the TDC sensor is giving funny readings.
Only electrics I undid was ECU connector, earth near diff casing, earth chassis leg to gearbox, Passenger Front ABS connector, Battery, front fog light connector for removing bumper. bonnet alarm switch. reverse switch side of gearbox.

other things disconnected that cause problems...
Breather pipe on induction elbow left off?
induction elbow loose/ bottom not on properly.

let us know how you get on.

Yeh i did the box and clutch myself. Thought it might of been the tdc sensor that came on the box was faulty so i put my original one on after a clean and still no joy! The only cables/connections i disconected was the 2 earths, tdc sensor, reverse light sensor and the battery. I didnt remove the bumper, left the ecu connected and left the struts hanging.

Alright people, just got my car back! Apparently i had damaged the loom when swapping the box and he had to repair/replace some cables. All working fine at the min touch wood. The bill wasnt to bad either! Just glad to have it back on the road, was getting fed up with the dam thing. Cheers for all the replys.
