Gearbox /clutch fixed itself?

Hi. I own a 172. I pulled away in first gear and all seemed fine, I then selected second and lost all power. The car would rev and go into all gears but wouldn't move! I tried pulling away in all gears and was greeted with a horrible whine. So, having thought the gearbox was shagged I got towed back home. I started it up and bam, all power is back, goes into all gears, drives fine. Any ideas?? Regards

Sounds like the clutch went... these self repairing cars...
