Gearbox gone..

Car  306 GTI-6. 172.
Hi all, well after roughly 4 months ownership my gearbox has given up the ghost. The car in question is a Y reg 172 with around 45k on the clock.

So where do I go from here? Do I buy a second hand gearbox or do I have mine reconditioned?

Just looking to hear from others who have had similiar problems as mine and what they did. Any ideas on cost (I am guessing this is going to be very expensive)

Cheers all.

u can pick up a second hand gearbox for quite cheep now on here. but there is allways the possability that the gearbox you put in (being 2nd hand) will give up the ghost soon along the way also!

i'd probably get it reconditioned depending on price obviously compared to a new one from reanult.

Cheers for the replys guys. I think I am going to go down the reconditioned route, Tony is the cost you mention from somewhere in astwood bank?

The chaps that do the work on my cars http://www.ejmpreparation.co.uk/ (The 106 on that site is my old car) Mentioned that is where he would send it to be reconditioned. £350 doesn't seem to bad to be honest, well alot better than I thought it would be.

Thanks again.

I found a fully reconditioned one to be £650 from a gearbox specialist. They would do £500 if you exchanged your old box.. New from Renault was about £725. Got mine off the bay, second hand, £300, off a cup with 55k. Win. When you say your gearbox has 'gone', what do you mean?

if it's only £350 to have the box reconditioned with new bearings i'd take that option. Make sure you fit a new clutch whilst your there too.

I had mine rebuilt last year at a cost of £450 with clutch and fitting it came to about a grand in all. Not a bad price considering the pain it is to remove the box!

And I got a years warranty!

At the moment I am not entirely sure. I will find out tomorrow, all I know for definite is that it is buggered! Will report back when I know.

Tony, are you going to let on to who this chap is? I am getting a price tomorrow from my guys but would like to have more than one option for the rebuild.

PM Burp, he knows the exact location of the guy.

Feckin 'ell, and i thought the old Clio 16v boxes were bad!

Does your box have a bolt in diff or does it use the circlip?

Thanks again for the replys. I sent it off to this place today http://www.gearboxman.co.uk/ around £500 for a full recondition, not to bad. It wasn't just the circlip it was pretty mangled to be honest, a former owner must have treated it very badly.
