Gearbox maybe?

My mates 172-quick was acting funny the other night. Loud whinning noise and would only rev to 4K. Its well over due its belt change, but the engine seems to be ok.
Anyway, he was driving round to mine and didn't make it, load noise and no drive. the gear stick moves from side to side as normal, but when he releases the clutch pedal the car moves and makes a horible grinding noise. He can't start the car without the clutch being in as the car moves forward as if it was in gear. If you try and select a gear the stick won't go into one. Is just a bit wierd the gear knob will move side to side, but not up or down.
Any ideas? Selector maybe?

well sounds bang on like mine did last summer,>cant start,cant push without clutch
clutch will start burning and stinking if try to move it much then both will give up.
sounds identical to mine and i got new box+clutch

ouch, could it not just be taken out and rebuilt up? It's as if its half in gear, half out.

well yeah it couldave been taken out stripped and rebuilt but old box out new one in(well 2nd hand)
thought that would be a bit of work to strip and rebuild so went for a 55k jb1 box for a quicker box,
