gearbox oil - 172

this may sound really stupid and a typical woman question but where does the gearbox oil go? why didnt Haynes make a manual for the 172!!!!!

Ive been having problems changing down gears and someone said it may need gearbox oil changing, or worse could be my syncro, what is the best oil to use and where does it go?

i use silkolene gearbox oil (75w90)

drain plug is underneath, filler plug should be facing towards the front of the car - but you'll need a funnel because of location and size of hole.

Make sure you've got the tool to refill the gearbox first as its a pain to do Renault have tooling to do it.

Having trouble changing down was the first symptom I got. The next problem I got was it crunching changing up gears. Since it was happening on a 172 with only 20,000 miles on it I thought it must be the oil too. Renault looked at it and agreed to replace the synchros under warranty. They said the problem with the downchanging was the synchro rings jamming. They're promising to tell me more if any cause is obvious when they pull down the gearbox.
