Gearbox Oil Leak

  172 Cup
Hi guys/gals,
Got a problem with my 172 cup, i think my gearbox is leaking oil but cant be sure, just at looking under the car there is a build up of oil on the cover below the gearbox, anyone any ideas on what it could be?

when staring the car i get the "oil ok" message and i have no problems with changing gears at all, no sign of crunching from 1st to 2nd etc.

just seems these last few days there has been a build up of oil on the drive!:dapprove:

Need to get the under engien cover off and clean up and ee where its comming from.

Gearbox leaking usualy results in a keenness no to go in gear and it justmps out of 5th and doens't like it.

cheers guys, like i said, it doesn't have any trouble going into gear at all, other than the patch on the drive i wouldn't have known, the cover did deem to be covered in oil though.

Hey, the oil will be leaking out of where the selector goes into the box! its a common fault. The seal round it comes loose then the selector moving elongates the hole! To get the leak fixed you need the box stripped and rebuilt. Unfortunately you cannot take the selector out of the box and put a new seal like most other boxes! its a fault with most renault gearboxs, Keep the oil topped up. What i have found is that if you get some stopleak, for gearboxes and put it in with the oil IT ACTUALLY WORKS. This is where the leak is most probably coming from. I wouldnt worry about getting the box rebuilt, just try the stop leak first, and keep an eye on the oil level. If you have noticed it in time it wont have done any damage.

Hope this helps.

right guys, just reversed my car back and think it might be the PAS which is leaking, the leak is prodominantley (spelling?) down the left hand side when looked at from the bumper and the liqid on the drive is slight oil but mainly like a greasey liquid, cant tell if its red cos got block paving! but also when looking in the engine bay, its covered!

Do you mean its leaking from the drivers side? If it is, theres a sensor on a PAS pipe there, youll see it, when you look down very common to leak from here. Dont know about the price of a gearbox rebuild over in mainland, but can get it done over here for £250. Though if its not the box leaking then happy day. Wont fail MOT as long as you give it a wipe with a rag before going in to make sure oil isnt dripping from the car. and clean it all up :)

cheers for the help guys, its going in on monday to have it sorted, think it is the PAS cos the power steering seems to be getting heavier by the day! What ever it it its sprayed the left hand side of the engine bay, the battery is covered and the bonnet carpet thing is covered!

£250 plus whatevers broken depends where you go that doens't imclude a new clutch which is idealy IMO and essential plus removal and replacments costs at 7.2 hours.

COuld well be the PAS return line has failed it does happen IMO keep the bottle topped up all the time don't drive th car for long and get it to the garage right now don't drive it anyway as when the pumps runs with no fluid it does set on fire.

Mine has been looked at by the dealers who got I got the car from this week;
I mentioned that it's common on the 172s and some people have cured it with stopleak.

They said the gearbox oil was 1/3 full so they filled it and told me they need to bring the car back to strip the gearbox :S
