gearbox problems

i broke down the other day so i got my mate to tow me home only problem is now my auto gearbox wont go above 40 mph i've checked the oil level and its ok, anybody got any ideas ?? im guessing its fucked ??

is it changing gears or stuck in 1st?

yer it changes up and down the box fine but at about 3000 revs the engine sounds like its really straining but it still wont go above 40 mph

strange mate no nothing about autos if it didnt change i thought maybe easy fix as just stuck in gear

I expected to find a big warning in the owners manual saying don't tow an automatic because the gearbox isn't lubricated when the engine isn't running. To always tow automatics with the driving wheels off the ground. But at least in the mk2 manual I have it says its ok if you don't tow it too far. Like over 30 miles. How far did you tow it?

this is called limp mode, most auto's do it if there is a suspected problem. in ur case its probably a duff sensor, take it to any garage and they can fix it cheap
