gearbox, what to do





gearbox is on its way out, now do i.

a)take it in to be repaired ASAP as it may cost me very little(around£350 all in)

b)hope it lasts through york RWYB moday after next

c)just drive it til it fails completely?(£450 re-con box fitted)

tempted to take it in after RWYB but at the same time dont wnat it to blow in york cos i will be well pissed off if i get there but the gearbox can only take one run! basically its fine, until you boot it when it starts to crunch into third and sometimes refuses to go in altogether! the other night after givin it some with a CRX VTec it refused to go into third, it just spat the lever back at me! it has only done this once but from experience it can only get worse!
 


sort it soon as. my gearbox went and i left it, in the end drive shafts, pc joints, clutch, wheel bearings etc had to be replaced, quite expensive! not sure how much of it was caused by the gearbox though.

Let me know as i cant bout mine with-out it getting ridiculasly stiff. Have u explained this problem to a mechanic as some people seem to think it could be a warped clutch which will make it hard to cahnge gear when hot. Mine will need doing soon too.:(
 


defo not the clutch mikey, in mine its worn synchros. the car has had a new clutch recently, the gears feel notchy though and refuse to go in sometimes so its defo the g/box!

Mine did this, started off not going into third, bouncing out, 60 miles later, would only go into 1st, 2nd and 5th, making awful grinding noises....like a was towing a load of garden rakes or something....wiped some of the gears out totally....just got mine back with a sachs clutch and its sorted - cost me £430 tho...and its on the drive with something else wrong with it now...i would get it sorted, u might get away with replacing less parts nowe if you get it reconned, and at least youll know u have a NICE uprated clutch in there to go at on the York strip..

hey mate, i thought ur valver only had 25k on the clock? seems a bit early for the gearbox going? or did u have the willy box in with the engine?
 


had the willy box mate, my old valver did only have 25k on the clock but the gearbox was even worse then this one! depends how you drive it i suppose:oops:

Renault gearboxes are sh*te thats why....although the williams one is supposed to be stronger......!

I would get it sorted before you go york mehdi....dont want it to go on you on the strip!

If things work out i will be bringing my VR as well....but wont be striping it out or anything cant be arsed with all that.......judging from GTI international Im looking at 0 - 60 times of 7.2 and 1/4 mile times in the 15s.....slow compared to you williams and 172 boyz but hey my VR weighs a sh*t load!
 


renault gearboxs are poo but we make up for it in the fun department! big 2.9 V6 struggling to keep with us little 2l 16v, oh well, thats the difference between fun and build quality i suppose! see you at york!
 


;) i told you not to tell anyone mike! ive decided to take it in this tuesday(i hope, the guy is getting back to me on monday) all ready for the following monday at york. still being very careful and not using 3rd at all just incase im using this gearbox at york! i reckon i will manage a coiple of runs with this box if all else fails

that box was ok when i sold it

cant see it being the clutch as i had an uprated k-tec jobbie put in and it had only done about 3k when i had it

My gbox is doing fine at 100k miles, whines a little but nothing to worry about. My flatmates lasted til 130k, when it was damaged by a flood he drove into!
