Gearbox????

I have a 2002 172 cup. There seems to be a horrendous noise coming from the gearbox. A very loud mechanical grinding noise when u put the car in gear. Theres no drive whatsover. It seems to go into gear fine but, the gearsticks fine all the gears are there but you can put it into gear without the clutch. Also you can push the car when its in gear. Anyone had a similar problem or know what it could be?

input shaft for the box perhaps. maybe even the diff if you aint getting any drive, does the noise change at all when your putting it in gear or working the clutch?

the diff was what me and my mates thought. Just keeps making that noise when in gear but even louder. Its weird because it seems to select gear fine. it all feels ok but just makes a huge noise and theres no drive. a mate sez the clutch mite just be destroyed but he won't know until next week once he strips it all down.

clutch was my initial thought but it would mean its stuck in the disengaged position and if it feels normal then cant be that. i would say the diff then if it selects gear fine but theres no drive.

were you giving it beans when it happened or has it happened over time?

sounds like you have popped the circlip on the diff, people have tried welding the clip in to secure it, some successful others not. common problem

the circlip went on my first box but it didn't make a noise like that there was just no drive. I dropped into 4th at about 100 overtaking a car then I just heard a noise that resembled dropping a socket set into a washing machine haha
