Gen90 Issue

If you use a specialist components typhoon I can send you a map that'll be pretty damned close.

I'd be interested in that as I have the EC1, I don't mind paying for it as I'll be using Scoff at EFI for mapping, he sorted my map out on the current set up, I've not asked him if he has a base map yet.

Regards Russ....

You can have mine Russ.
SC weren't that helpful when I had problems with mine from tdf , they kept sending me back to him, the rest is history as they say.

Russ, I won't charge for it. It's mapped for 428's so will be a little on the rich side for stock cams but really won't be too far out. You'll just have to change the sensor calibration on the coolant and air to suit yours.

Pm me your email and I'll fire it across later when I've fired the laptop up.

Cheers Col forgot you had the map, and cheers Dan, I'll PM you my email address no rush ok when you get time.^^^^^^^^^^^

Regards Russ...........

Guys,

Just to put our side to this thread across, to try and make sense of what seems to have been totally misconstrued.

We were called by a lady asking for a pedal mounting bracket and engine mount support from our throttle body kit, which had been purchased second hand.

We have four members of staff who pick up the phone on the mail order side, some more experienced than others in this type of product.

As with a lot of the finer detailed products, I was asked about this and sought to try and check that the kit was in fact one of our DTH kits, as if it was removed from a car complete, the engine support block should have been present, if indeed that it what we were being asked for.

One of our team was phoned by the guy fitting the kit who confirmed that the pedal mounting.

The lady phoned again, asking for the same parts and wishing to pay for them.

I picked up the phone on this occasion and asked for confirmation, pictorially being the best option, that in fact the kit was one of ours and I could then see what she was looking for. She herself admitting that she did not know the first thing about cars and had been asked to call on her partners request.

OK, this happens a fair amount and for things like brake kits, springs or air filters, we can muddle through with reg numbers etc to make sure the customer gets the correct product, an ITB kit however is not the same thing.

This being the case I asked for the following:

What has the kit come from, i.e. Phase 1 172? Phase 2? How old is the kit? Which ECU is with the kit? Which TPS does it have? Do you have the correct TPS adaptor to work with the wiring loom depending on the answer to the first question?

These are sensible questions to ask when trying to HELP a customer who is trying to make something that they have purchased second hand function on a new application.

I then spoke to the same lady again later in the day who insisted on paying for the parts we had not yet identified, I asked once more for confirmation of the questions I had raised. This time there was a gentleman in the back ground who as I asked a question, was then asked by the lady, who then received a response, who then passed on the information to me, this appears to be because he was too angry to talk to me on the phone.

So after a triangulated phone call, it was agreed that on Friday we would receive a picture of the goods, and here it is.
image (1).JPG

I was off on Friday, so my colleague Mat, who is our newest member of staff, received the image and the information that the kit was previously on a Phase 1 172. Clearly this is a bit of mix and match of bits from Jenvey / Pipercross / KTR etc, but at least we were getting somewhere. We also now knew that the car it was going onto was a 172 Cup. This being the case the firmware and to a certain extent software setup in the GEN90 would also need to be changed to suit a phase 2 car. Interestingly enough though, those sharp eyed amongst you will note the phase 2 DBW connector loom tucked around the back of No. 4 Cylinder pot, hummm.

So, now we knew what we were dealing with from this kit point of view, we now needed to know what else was employed on this engine as a bespoke start up cal we do charge a nominal fee for. If it is an off the shelf application such as an otherwise standard engine, we do not. As of yet I am not aware we have received this information as Andy is on holiday today but will return to work tomorrow.

In any case, we have three ways of sorting this, as we have done for many customers who have purchased used equipment.

1) We will Team View into their laptop, with a connection to the car established and upload the relevant firmware, software and calibration. This is done free of charge for standard base calibrations and firmware updates using the free issue GenTuner Lite supplied with our GEN90 ECU.

2) Will write a package to install and the customer simply uses GenTuner Lite to install the package themselves, again free of charge.

3) The customer returns the ECU to us, we bench load the updates, check the ECU and return it to them, yes, you guessed it, free of charge.

So, there's where we are with this one, I guess the moral of the story here is, if you want help please phone up or email yourself.

Regarding using a GEN90 on a Phase 1 Car. There are some outputs / inputs on the GEN90 which are software controlled and some which are not. The Phase 1 car did not use CANBUS, DBW Throttle etc, so yes there are some pin changes, 18 to be precise, on the engine wiring harness ECU connector to change over. This takes around 30 minutes to perform and is of course reversible.

Once this is done the Phase 1 will run turn key with an appropriate calibration loaded, the said same calibration will not run a Phase 2 car.

Phase 1 and Phase 2 cars both run in all applications with out any dashboard lights and CANBUS related functions work properly, this is not the case with an OMEX 600 piggybacked into the car.

If in future anyone has any questions specific to the GEN90 ECU please speak to myself of Andy and we will be only too pleased to help you.

Sean.

Fair play on that response, certainly sounds like you have been trying to help but I agree totally that without the correct information from the customer you had no chance!

Haha thanks for the reply Sean - it's as helpful and concise as every single dealing I've had with you in the past. As in brilliant.

Nice to get the side of the story from you guys. It seems a case of chinese whispers going on, not sure why Leeds_182 didn't phone you direct :(

I emailed the information on Friday and revived an email from Andy wanting to know who the tuner was to which I replied that I hadn't chosen one. I haven't heard anything since.

I did get the wife to call on my behalf initially as I was at work and not in a position to call. I admit I did get her to call back when I was at home but this was due to me been cheesed off and ready to put a hammer to the gen90.

I'm not an arse but I did speak to someone and they never offered me point 1, 2 or 3 - I would've been quite happy if they had!

Just to clear this up - I didn't put this thread on here to **** ktec off as that's not my style but I must reiterate that nobody offered me option 1, 2 or 3 in any of the phone calls.

Ill await the email from Andy and all my problems should be solved....

We can only offer option 1, 2 or 3 when we know what we are putting on the ECU though.

If you can forward your email to Andy on to me sean@ktrsport.com I will see what I can do for you and hopefully be in a position to carry out 1, 2 or 3 tomorrow.

How's that sound?

Sean.

That really makes me laugh... Why on earth would you ask your wife (who openly admits that she did not know the first thing about cars) to call K-tec because you where 'angry' with a product? Just adding more confusion and frustration to the situation IMO!

Sounds good. I'm at work but won't get the wife to ring you this time.

Email incoming!

if you had for example said you were coming to me, or one of a couple of others, he would have just said get the car here and I could do it all for you. I've done a couple of firmware changes where the GEN90 has been "hacked" for want a of better word, with other firmware, and lost functionality as a result.

After my little, shall we say, miscommunication with ktec they have been very helpful.

I sent the ecu to them on Tuesday and it was back with me on Thursday with a basemap and correct firmware to for my car and no charge for the service.

The ecu was fitted this evening and the car fired up first time!

Glad its sorted, fair play to them for helping you out :)

Slagging them off on here does seem to be a good way to motivate them, they seem very image conscious and hence a lot more willing to do stuff when its in the public eye.

Once everyone knew what they wanted it was all hunky dory. Obviously, my mrs calling initially seemed to confuse the situation but we got there in the end so thanks again to ktec for sorting it so speedily.
