Gmail Calendar iOs Help

Is anyone else having issues with Gmail calendars not syncing across devices?

I am kinda confused as gmail is my default calendar entry on the iOS app via the exchange. Ive heard i need to change that to gmail via a googleaccount in settings but it means i lose my entries if i change calendar?!

Cheers thanks for help, bit complicated as my old calendar won't sync only my new gmail one will and I get loads of double entries.
