i really need to start learning to use linux as well it may come in handy one day oh and i hear some linux video player can play wmv drm content and i have terminator 2 HD sat here asking to be watched

Personally I think KDE sucks and have my machines here at work using gnome.

KDE sucks. It looks so CRAP.. it's Windows looking bad.

GNOME looks better..

Either way, use none.. stick to console

I think the only way to learn linux is to use the console. Dont use it as your main OS. Just have it as a dual boot or on an old machine. The gui's are pure gash imo and you're not really learning linux skills by using it.

When I started using Linux, um, 7 years ago.. I used a few window managers (no desktop environments like KDE/GNOME) then later on Fluxbox. *Everything* was console based to do with admin, files etc.. Mail, Browser and Chat were about the only GUI apps I used.

To be honest, Fluxbox is so polished.. it was awesome for me.. (It did nothing apart from display stuff, which is what I wanted)

KDE is what I use, most good sys admins will either use a terminal or kde, gnome sux ass.

XGL isnt the name of the distro its a new way of rendering the linux desktop, basically everything is rendered using opengl (yes like in games) which just means you can go absolutely mental with the desktop.. puts vista to shame for sure.

IIRC an xgl live distro CD was called korrora
