Going to look at a clio tomorrow, 1ST CAR :D

Honestly, you should try to swallow the insurance costs for going alone. I did from day 1. £1500 for an entry-level Diesel Corsa wasn't fun, but it stopped me making the car worse with ghey "modz" as I needed to be able to afford the insurance and other costs, whilst being a student.

And now, with almost 14 years NCB I've got a pretty good position with companies for anything I like....well, until I factor the missus in, who's techincally got no NCB, even thoguh she's been on my policy for 4 years without incident.

advice from a 19 year old here.

i passed at 17, was a named driver on my mums car for a year and then looked at getting myself a car. because i had been a named driver for a year i had nothing in terms of a NCD. my policy started out at just short of 3k :eek:

ive now got my own car and after driving it for a year i got a quote (with my ncb) and it was down at 1200! thats over 50% nocked off with only 1 year no claims.

dont go on as a named driver as it will be a nightmare to insure anything in later life!

on and get the clio. much better looking than a polo!

Welcome to the world of cars.

Go for whatever is the cheapest to insure and then stick with it for a coupler of years and don't go trying to "improve" it eitgher, as you'll either increase your premium or invalidate your policy (depending on if you declare said "improvements").

Foot the bill for this first year and you'll be better off long-term

Have you tried putting mum/dad as named drivers on your insurance? thats what i did, got it down to £1600 for a 20yr old with no ncb on my 1.2

So long as they doi drive it once in a while, this is a great move.

Reading up on one of those links I posted, have you considered a classic Mini? Bang it through classic car insurance and save.

Also, you'll have something with some character
 
Got it down to about 1450 on 1.2 Clio or 1.4 Fox on parents with DirectLine.

Considered a classic mini but mum said it wasnt safe enough and i wasn't allowed one as a first car just in case, i really wanted one though aha!

Try churchill? as a named driver you can claim no claims with them (although it can only be used with them in the future)

You will die in a crash if you get a original Mini. Don't forget it's not just about you hitting stuff, it's about other people hitting you too. And since you're not an experienced driver yet you won't be able to get yourself out the way etc.

Also most Classic insurance needs you to be over 25.

If someone said to me at 17, you can only have two cars:

1) A VW Fox
2) A Fiat Cinquento

I would take the Fox, because I'm not mentally deficient. It's the OP's first car ffs, it needs to be dull, safe, cheap to run and reliable. 1.2 16v Clios have far too many gremlins for this, hell I bet a low mileage Alfa 147 would be more reliable than a 1.2 16v Clio.

I hope OP doesn't see that picture, else hormones and y0! will demand he increases his premiums via stick on gash-plate

oh and +1 over 1.2 clios being money-pits.
Clios are money pits, period. Doesn't matter which one you get, you're still going to end up staring at big bills one day.

Especially as, being the frist car, it will invariably have the envelope "pushed" one day, to impress clunge / mates.

Why not go for an older Clio such as a dynamique or a PH1? They are pretty strong engines to be fair, mines at 142,000 miles now and it's started first time everytime and pulls along nicely compared to some other mates Fiesta's that are on 60k odd.

Oh yeah, because a Clio is so baller. Its a first car, as I said. Needs to be cheap, safe, dull, slow not easily modded.

Aygo/107/C1 are cheap to insure because they don't get amateur chassis engineers buying them for lows and picking up hot chav ass.

This. You'll look like a right bellend. A Clio isn't the most manlyist car in the world but a damn sight better than something like that.

My mate's Clio is a 52 plate and on over 100,000 miles and its still running sweet as a nut.

He clearly isnt the sought to modify a car if hes considering an aygo. Looks so dull, just nothing nice about it IMO. Just see what quotes you get back for the above cars and make your mind up.

:lolup: The tears rolled for a good few finutes after reading this.

Clio's invariably start of as "just going to colour-code my strips" and end up "checkout how lowz I is ova 17s n mi YOzza iz propa sick y'kna"

Oh, and I'd say the lower running costs make the Aygo a far better car for the time than an old-style 1.2 Clio of any fashion. Maybe hunt one with the alloys though.

Shopping-edition clios aren't exactly lookers either, let's face it, hence why all the wannabes quickly start tryikng to make them look like RS Clio's, with varying degrees of non-success.

Have you ever driven a Aygo/C1/107? I have, I nearly bought a brand new 107 when I was getting rid of my 206 GTi, in the end I ended up getting another Clio (my Ph2 172 Flamer).

It was quite a fun car to drive, put quite a smile on my face because you could boot it all say every day and it just lapped it up. I got 70mph out of the demo car in 2nd gear. I had a Ph1 1.2 8v Clio, it was a massive hunk of shite. Replaced it with a Ph1 Si 1.4 16v which was miles better but hell of a lot more to insure.

It's all about insurance for the OP, hence why he started this thread. Your advice isn't really helping.

Agree with above, C2 is a pretty decent looking car along with Fiesta's (2001ish age ones, im not in the know with the MK for the shapes)

Newer design, cheaper to run.

and the 3-pot doesn't sound all that bad either for something missing at least 3 cylinders

Also on the insurance price part, I found it cheaper to insure a PH1 clio 1.4 than a newer Aygo/107 etc. This is because their worth f**k all in value so when it eventually does get flipped through someones front headge backwards on fire then it will only get £300odd for the car value as opposed to £3,000.
