Going to look at a ph1 172....

  R34 GT-R & 172 Cup
Well its renault so the whole car :) just check engine for leaks, exhaust, un-even wearing on tires, un-even wearing on disk breaks. And the paper work is all in order

  PH1 V6
3 Key Things....

Paperwork, service history and full visual inspection. The panels dont always line up perfectly on them but never the less have a good look around and make sure paint shade is same colour (trying to avoid a previously crashed car etc).

Ohter than that not alot.... basic things cambelt and aux belt is quite an expensive job so good idea to see if thats been done and if not... negotiate that into the buying price

Good luck

The other one I may be looking at as FSH!

Find out why it hasnt got service history, some people will say they havnt got service history because they have changed the mileage, and as u said its got quite low mileage. But if it looks okay and runs well e.g power is nice and smooth not jerky then its down to you wanting it or not.

I looked around 8 in total before i got a perfect one, the one thing that let them down was the exhausts.

No service history isnt necessarily a problem as long as you know what to look at when viewing. The work may have just been carried out privately which would be that senario for me.

FSH is good because you know work has been done and has a track record. Just use your head, have a GOOD look over the car, under the bonet and take it for a good drive to check its all running true etc. There are some bargains to be had on cars with no service history. Knock them down on it and tell them you are viewing another with FSH so you need them to give you a price insentive to buy it (thats asuming you think the car is sound in the first place.

Yer im not saying there bad, just a possible reason for not having it. It all comes down to a test drive and what you see really, or pay the AA to come look at it with you lol

I rather have high mileage with a full service history than low mileage and none as it is so easy to just swap the clocks over. At least with a high mileage one its not hiding anything. There was a low mileage one on ebay a while back which turned out to have 121,000 miles when checked against the mot. Make sure belts are done, when driving it check it brakes in a straight line as i've had two ph1's now and both have had seized callipers at some point. Washers jet moters go so check them. Airbag lights on the dash are sometimes down to loose wiring under the passenger seat. I'll probably think of more in a bit.

Knocking at arounk 5k revs is usually the dogbone mount which is about £50. Clunking on full lock either way could indicate a worn on knackered driveshaft £250 for the pair on an exchange basis.

Thanks for all the info..

Both that ive been to look at today have been no go's...

The one with no service history's interior wasnt the best, was missing the 6cd changer, the front bumper was hanging a bit due to broken clip and it had an induction kit on... And 5 previous owner with only 55,000 on the clock, yea right!!

The other one looked mint, very good condition, everything looked great.. But the engine was making a funny noise, my dad said it sounded like the Cam was on its way out so had to turn it down..

Still on the search! I loved test driving it though, so so good!
After 160 miles of travelling, atleast I know that I definately want one!

Im thinking of going to look at a sunflower yellow one near to me... My only concern is the mileage at 82,000... My dad recons I should avoid it with that sort of mileage, but surely thats still good for a 10 year old car!
It has service history aswell, with the cambelt being done around 15,000 miles ago.!

The one i've got now is on 115k and there is nothing at all wrong with it. don't be put off by 80k just don't pay over the odds for a yellow one.

I may be putting mine up for sale when i've put it through its mot and done a few small jobs on it. Mine will have a full ph2 interior though rather than the bobbly alcantara and the horrible blue dash.

See im not too worried about it being on 80k (i would prefer lower but as they are 10 year old cars, it will be pretty scarce to find a good one with low mileage), its just my dad moaning about it... Even though he knows I only plan to keep it for a year!

Good stuff, im tempted to go and look at this yellow one then! Its up for £2500 at the moment with 85k, has some service history and looks in good condition!
Think I could wing it down to £2000? (as that is my ideal price to spend, and ive seen many other 172's for that price)

Get the best you can, regardless of price (as long as it is not ott).

I bought a ph1 which needed some work, and ended up spending a small fortune on repairing the engine and bodywork. After getting the car cheap, it has cost as much as a very good condition one would have cost in the first place.

I would spend £2000 without a second thought as long as it was in good condition with the relevant paperwork etc. The ph1 seem to be holding value quite well, but you can also pick bad examples up for around a grand too, but these are mostly going to require lots of money being spent on them to make them good enough to use as an everyday car.

However, you won't be dissapointed with the ph1, they are great fun and have the added bonus that as time goes on, there are less and less on the road and if any of the modern Renaults were to gain any sort of desirability status in the future I would say ph1 172 would be the one that gets it - it was the first Renaultsport model released, and without its success the other RS models probably would not have been released...

Im going to try and get it down to £2k because its got quite high mileage and it has not tax atm, so will need to fork out for that aswell!
I think it would be a fair price, whether the owner thinks that or not is another question! lol

Thanks for the help guys, ill keep everyone updated as things happen ;)

You going to see it on Sunday? In Cheshire?

Shame mines not ready you could have both come looking at it while you were in the area.

LOL! I want it BUT im busy till next saturday!

I wouldn't pay anymore than £2k!

I wouldnt pay much more than £2k either... Ive seen a few at £2k so dont want to go any higher than that! (Especially when insurance is going to be around £1k for me lol)

Are you actually viewing it tomorrow? If so, would you let me know how it is etc?

Im otherwise engaged tomorrow :(
Thats cheered me up a bit! I was well excited about the car until you said that you were interested aswell! ;)
There are 2 or 3 which I want to look at though, but this one is my favourite out of the lot so ive chose to look at this one first!

Atleast I know you're only willing to pay the same amount as I am, so I must be thinking along the right track!
