Google's internet speed

Don't people in Japan and the like have faster connections at home than that?

Impressive. I am curious what the standard will be in 5 years time.
I had to recable my house to get the full speed from my internet connection I only had a 100mb/s connection with the router and internet is 120mb/s. A couple of years ago, that would be unthinkable! Roll on 1GB/s downloads. :)

Its all well and good having insane download speeds.
As long as the upload is there too! ;)

That would be nice indeed. Though when I can get VM 100Mb in my area that will be 12.5MBps so will be pretty quick like :)

Future will be FTTH (Fibre to the home). Thats how we will be able to achieve such speeds.

Why would any home user need this, seriously?

My 4MBish connection very rarely gets laboured.

Only limit to ours is the cap they've put on our fibre line. OC3 at the moment, weirdly its faster in the day time when theres less information going in and out. When all the cameras here go live and the networks load up it slows down a fair bit.

Last time I looked the fastest home connection is 40 Gb/s (Yes, I do mean giga bits / second) which funnily enough belongs to the Mother of the CEO of Cisco or something (google "40 Gb/s internet") and that Seoul is the fastest city averaging 100 Mb/s.

As someone has said, why do you need anything this fast? Even at 10mb/s films download quite quickly, everything streams fine even in HD too?

Personally, the quicker I can download things the better. If its available, I will get it lol

Try streaming 2/3 HD movies at once and you'll soon figure out why higher speeds exist ;)

That isn't really amazing for a company the size of google :S We have just had 100meg dedicated link put in and theres 10 people who work here lol, for the amount of people at google and their money and technology would have expected more?

Most likely thats the speed just accross one gateway. Depending upon which one we use it can be anything from 1mb to full OC3.

You say that, but once you've had faster, you can't imagine putting up with a slower speed. I had a problem with my connection this week and could only get 50Mb/s. It felt horribly slow compared to usual just as I am used to being able to find a show or film in HD quality an to have it downloaded in a couple of minutes, rather than half an hour.

I didn't realise that Sweden was so far ahead though. I guess it will reach us eventually too. :)

Yup. Once you had faster, going back is horrible. Same applies to anything. I thought my 1.2 Clio first car was fine. Then I had to drive it again having driven faster cars and hated it.

I remember the days of 4 kbs download speeds. Taking 20mins to get a song. Then realising it was something else :(

Yeh I guess. Imagine streaming 3 pornographic films on your PC whilst playing some Xbox Live at the same time. Then my friends, we really have made it as a species... :)
