Grinding Brakes

over the last few months, my brakes have been grinding quite badly. It sounds like its coming from the rear... but the discs and pads have only done 4k miles.

what could be the cause?

Are the discs surface silver and shiny or a bit rusty?

It may just be surface rust on them (particularly if its rained) that takes a while to clear on the rears if they aren't being used heavily.

they're the usual ruty around the outside.. but shinyish on the braking surface.

i guess it wouldn't hurt to give them a good clean :)

run your fingernail across the disc surface and feel for any ridges or ruts in the disc, its quite common to have a stone or something small trapped between the pads and the disc and it can grind into the disc making an un nerving sound! either take them off to get them out or simply wait until it grinds itself to death!
