grinding noise from brakes

right here is the problem, my front brakes are making a grinding noise everytime i lightly place my foot on the brake. now i have had this before and just washed the brake dust away and it stopped, but i dont think it is that again, i have my mot this tuesday so what do i need to do to see if it is ok and get it fixed. as i would rather do it than pay someone to do it. HHEELLLLPPP

Grinding noise is your brake pads are metal to metal mate, get it jacked up and have a look at them, inners and outers.

It'll fail an MOT aswell if they are.
