I thought I would make a progress thread for my 6. I normally have motors that I'm not proud enough to document! I've had 5 306s before but never a petrol one so I thought I'd make a decent thread of it. Ive had 3 hdis and 2 dturbos. I have had numerous cars in between 306s but always end up having a 306 as a project or as an oil burner. Ive had 18 cars and Im 20 but I like Peugeots because they are easy to work with
My first 306 was a 5 door hdi glx spec, bought it for £200 2 years ago with a knackered engine but tax+ test. Got it remapped for 100 quid in Bradford, homemade decat and straight through exhaust made 130bhp on rollers.
I ended up doing a fair bit to this car. New engine in, leathers, gti6 suspension, black cyclones, fitted a laguna splitter and painted the masks in the front lights. Learnt a lot about cars on this one.
Sold it looking like this. (Not my pic)
2nd 306 was a Dturbo S 5 door that was owned by a family friend for years and I always wanted it, he smashed the boot in before I got it so I bought it with tax and test for next to nothing. Turned the pump up a lot! Wound it round 2 full turns Homemade decat and plenty of smoke meant it was a fun car.
This is when it was filled with magazines.
The constantly black boot and dent.
My 3rd 306 was a Diablo Red Meridian hdi and I don't have any pics of this. I put a spoiler on it and some cyclones and then sold for ££££, was remapped and decatted for nothing.
My 4th 306 was a Black 3 door Dturbo, I got this off a friend who had abused it so I gave it some love. Lowered it on Avo suspension off ebay £31!! Put my 205 speedlines on it, fitted full phase 1 gti6 leathers which were near mint and gave it a compound. It had the rear quarter painted before and I hated the fact it had seen paint. Sold it for what I paid for it basically. Had a lot of fun in it though because it was turned up and had a straight through exhaust system on it.
My 5th 306 was one that I had been waiting 6 months for. It was near mint (keen eyes will notice the passenger side hockey stick). HDI Dturbo, a very economical and good handling car. Ever since my first 306 I had wanted a Hdi Dturbo because my friend got a mint one for 1k and I was jealous. It made me sick though when he trashed it, crashed it and then traded it in for peanuts I did 2k in this one over Xmas, realised it wasnt what I expected (as usual) and sold it for profit. It was completely standard and I told everyone before I bought it that I would keep it for years, it had only covered 65k in 12 years.
Day I got it

The latest 306 is a Gti 6 I got it on good friday, which was certainly a good day (even though it doesnt run). It cost me just over scrap value, its a 1997 phase 2 has FSH 80k miles and is near mint. Only 1 10p sized dent which I am going to get sorted. Its completely standard. The reason it was so cheap was because of a minor engine issue
As soon as I woke up saturday I set about seeing what was wrong with it, I was told it had no compression on cylinder 2...
Did some checks to confirm and got the head off to find this beauty.
I text the previous owner and asked if it had any trouble before as 6 engines seem to be made of cheese. He replied and said that the cambelt snapped at idle 6 years ago. A few valves were bent, they were replaced and new gasket, water pump and cambelt kit were fitted.
Now I have done a lot of reading about 6 engines and talked to a few engines builders and they recommend checking the valves on a laithe with a dti gauge because if they are 0.001 mm out they will sound tappy and eventually snap.
This car has covered 20k in the last 6 years so it hasnt really done much but I think one of the valves was ever so slightly bent and has eventually given up.
I am sending the head off tomorrow to be dipped, skimmed, 16 new valves installed and seats cut. It might need a new guide but he said it won't make any difference in price. £310 for the lot, so car stands me at ~£500, needs testing (£30) and taxing (~£120) and will be on the road!
Not a bad Gti6 for around £650 and some elbow grease
Sorry for the crap quality pics and rambling.
Cheers Marco
