Handbrake adjust/exhaust fitting!?!

  Cooper S JCW
I've just bought a mk2 ph1 172. It has a cat-back longlife exhaust fitted but it isn't to my taste so I've bought a Ktec cat-back system from another member on here that is in excellent condition.

The handbrake needs either adjusting or a new cable though as it won't stop my car from rolling on even the slightest incline.

Before I start jacking the car up can anyone shed any light on these questions:
Is it easier to do both of these jobs at once?
Is the handbrake adjustable on the ph1 172 inside the car? if so how?
Is there anything unusual about the fitting of an exhaust to this model that I should be aware of?

Thanks for your help - it is much appreciated :)

on the mk1 the adjuster is under the plastic cove at the rear of the handle (inside car)

BUT i've seen several with the rear calipers "out of sync"

easiest way to fix it is to slaken off the cable and reomve the cables from the calipers

pump the pedal a few times and put it back together and retighten the adjuster (don't go mad with it though)

should fix it

yep, you have to fully slacken off the small nut, then remove the cables (2of) from the rear calipers

pump the foot pedal (brake) several times

then put it all back together, and retighten the adjuster nut

Is it worth me replacing the cable whilst I'm getting this done or are the original cables usually sound?

never seen a cable go on one yet

Could it not be the adjuster screw rusted and seized ? I stripped some rear calipers down from an 02 plate 172 , one caliper was ok the other was seized solid .

When it went in the mechanic said something was seized in the rear calipers. He said he will be able to sort it when it goes in for the mot next week so I presume it may be as you say MrBilly - would the nut need replacing or just freeing up and lubricating?

I've just used this method Fred, and it worked a treat, thanks.

I found the best way to reach the adjuster nut is a long reach 10mm socket
on a six inch extension. Piece of p*ss.

Cheers again Fred.

Fred,

Does this procedure apply to tightening the handbrake on an 02 plate 172 ff ?

As my handbrakes quite poor aswell :dapprove:

Rolls on slightest incline.

P.s is the adjuster nuts under the handbrake plastic trim ??
