Handbrake won't pull up as far?

Handbrake doesn't secure when you pull it up, it clicks once really low down and doesn't secure the car.

Any ideas?

Not during my ownership. Come to think of it, I think they were an advisory on my recent MOT.

I changed mine a couple of weeks ago as they had literally disintegrated and the plate had come loose and wedged in the drum causing the brakes to be permanently on.

Best way to check it just wip the drums off and check the shoes. If they are worn get them replaced

Also, the handbrake holds the car if you pull it up and hold it, it just doesnt click into place. Suggesting that something on the lever/ratchet is broken?
