What are people running? Tyre size 195/50/15. Help would be really appreciated as the front does feel light

Dan

To be honest im going to try 30 all round tomo. Think im running 33 front and 29 on the rear. Anyone think that could be the reason why it feels so odd? It feels as though the back is lower than the front, which its not btw. And a real lack of feeling through the steering. This couldnt come at a worse time with my track day coming up

Dan.

I run 33 up front on my Meg, but it still looks a little soft, handles fantasticly though.

Oh and in the morning if i was to drive and take my hands off the wheel, the steering wheel moves right to left, not massively but i would say more than it should. Wheel balancing maybe? But would that cause my problem?
Would really appreciate any help guys its driving me mad
Dan

My 205/45/16s are doing this, almost as unpleasant as my eagle f1s (although they were immense in the rain). Is it weak sidewalls?

No idea mate but its doing my head in. I'm going to get the wheels balanced tomo along with putting 30 in all round to see if that helps.

Dan

oh and sounds symptomatic of out of shape tyres, unbalanced wheels will vibrate the steering wheel (front wheels anyway)

two things, whats fine balancing? Secondly will that give me an indication of misshapped tyres?

Dan

Ive just had a quick look at the osf and osr tyre and the arrow is facing forward. Didnt check the nearside but im assuming their okay

Dan

tyres usualy mishape when tread gets below 3mm, but some can mishape before then, indication is increased tyre noise, and increased instability. run your hands around them feeling for lumps and bumps. theres 2 ways to balance alloy wheels, the 1st is the easiest and that involves just the one set of weights placed on or just inside the inner rim. the second way (fine) is the same as before but a second set of weights added closer to the outside of the wheel (just inside the spokes) i work for a tyre place mate and i do this all the time. my front wheels are fine balanced and my rears static (the first way) balanced.

Ah okay cheers. What are the chances and i know its a difficult one to guess, maybe a problem with the rack? Taking into consideration what ive said.

Dan

Well thats one less thing to worry about, well maybe lol. Its a tad annoying as the tyres are newish and ive had coilovers fitted about six weeks ago. Going to get the wheels balanced tomo along with the tyre pressures and see how i get on with that. Stupid car lol. Oh and it looks like ive had my yahoo account hacked which means i cant read my email. Just gets better

Dan

Yeah got it all checked and set up by demon tweeks. Just getting the wheels balanced as we speak. And the tyre pressures. Its as though when your driving alond you can flick the steering wheel and its light, lack of feel, if that makes any sense at all?

Dan

Does this look right????????

Left front(camber) Right front(camber)
-1.19 -1.14

2.03(caster) 1.28(caster)

-0.03(toe) -0.03(toe)

-0.05 total toe
0.00 steer ahead.

Left rear(camber) Right rear(camber)
-1.13 -1.30

0.16(toe) 0.22(toe)

0.38 total toe
-0.03 thrust angle

The before measuremants were

Left front Right front

Camber 0.41 Camber -0.10
Caster 2.06 Caster 1.28
Toe 0.08 toe 0.06

0.14 total toe
0.01 steer ahead

Left rear Right rear

camber -1.16 camber -1.30
toe 0.17 toe 0.21

total toe 0.38
thrust angle -0.02

My understanding would be that the lightness at the straight ahead position is due to the change in front geo settings.

Uve gone from positive toe in & virtually no camber, to -0.03 toe out & -1.2 degrees of negative camber.

Whilst this will offer quicker turn in, the trade off will be slightly less stability & increased 'lightness' at the straight ahead position (less tyre in contact with the road).

Go & find a roundabout, ull find that there is considerably more front end grip when tyres are loaded into a corner :)

Cheers dave. Ive just had all the wheels balanced, the backs were miles out, and the passanger side front was a tad out. Will see how i get on after work. Thank you for everyones help:D

Dan

Thought id give it a couple of days before i tempted fait. But since having my wheels balanced and tyre pressures done, the car is spot on. Thanks again for everyones help.

Dan

Interesting! What pressure you running? My wheels are balanced, I'm a stickler for getting that just right.

No i had them on 33front 29 rear. Unsure on the wear at the mo as it only got done on Saturday.

Dan

hmmm i have this same problem geo is done tyres where balanced but after having a look i noticed that theres no weights on the front? should there always need to be weights? i have no vibrations and il have to check if the rear has any weights on aswell :s very strange think im going to go get the geo rechecked and tyres fine balance and check the pressure for god sake more money if people just did things correctly the first time itd save this hassle :(

edit just went out and had a look rear wheels have got new weights put on. so wont be that got to be pressures so will check them tomorow or later. shouldnt be geo as that was set up by jam-sport on monday

think i may have sorted mine god knows what pressure was in them but i now have 32f 30r seems alot better on corners rear end doesnt feel like its just going to jump out i could actually rock the car before and you could see loads of movement in the side walls. it still feels abit funny at motorway speeds its like say you just change lane quickly so a nice pull on the steering and it feels like its going to go sideways deffinatly better now though. i will let the tyres bed in before i put any more pressure in the rear :)
