Hi guys,
Today I bought a Titanium ph1 172 on 167k miles for £700.
The problems that have arisen in the 70 miles or so I have travelled today are as follows:
Immediate problems
- Gearbox
The gearbox whines and makes a loud knocking noise in first. It is also present in second and third but not until higher up the rev range. As far as I could hear it is not present in fourth and fifth. The speedo does not work and I was told this is because the gearbox does not have a speedo sender. Also has the problem of idling high and revving itself, had this on my mk1 when my speedo cable went so I'm putting this down to the lack of speedo signal.
- Stop light
The stop light is always on. I have been told this is because of the lack of speedo sender, is this likely?
- Steering
The tracking is absolutely days out, which im hoping will be sorted with an alignment so is not too worrying at the moment. What is more worrying is the noises it makes when I'm turning. Some clunking noises and feelings through the steering wheel arent too confidence inspiring.
Other issues
- Cambelt
Looked in the Renault service history booklet and it looks like the cambelt was changed at 140k miles. So sounds like it's due one now.
- Central locking
The central locking works neither with the remote keyfob nor the key in the door. It will lock itself via the button on the centre console, but of course you have to be inside the car to do this and then open the door to get out, which in turn unlocks all the doors! So if i want to leave the car locked I have to go round every door and lock it manually with the key.
Seems like a strange problem seeing as the locks are obviously receiving a lock and unlock signal from the button but not otherwise. Any ideas?
I am worried after getting the car home that I have made a booboo and have bought a car that I am not going to be able to A) drive properly without spending s**te loads of money on it or B) sell on without spending s**te loads of money on it.
I am not particularly interested in taking on another large project as I still have my mk1 on the go. Don't mind doing bits and bobs, changing the gearbox over for example but I have had a look at prices and they seem to vary greatly for 172 gearboxes, how much should I vaguely be looking to pay for a jc5? I was worried about the engine being too far gone to be reliable enough to drive hard but after looking through the projects section there are a few track cars with similar or more miles so thats a slight weight off my mind. What sort of mileage do the majority of 172s live for?
There are a number of good points going for the car:
Engine does seem to pull and respond well, apart from the idling problem which is really annoying!
The interior is in very good condition, has the half leather and alcantara upholstery and seats, is this a ph2 interior?
Its a 172!
There is quite a large service history.
New tyres
Basically what I want to know is peoples thoughts on whether I've bought a dog or not and how much I should be looking to spend on ESSENTIALS only to get it working as it should. I will be working on it myself, apart from maybe cambelt if it is absolutely necessary as I hear the procedure for doing it is a bit strange on these cars?
Cheers
