tiger you will notice a difference with the upscalling dvd players, just make sure you buy a decent one. but the new hd players that will be coming out will upscale your old dvd's like these players anyway. What are you running you dvd player through component or scart? if scart i highly recommend using component because this will allow the picture to be 480p rather than a bog standard interlaced picture.

so anyone got a decent upscaling dvd player, i might get one but i have heard varying results from them quality wise.

I've got the Samsung 950 (which is a model up from the 850) which is pretty good on my LE32R51 samsung TV - very happy with it until HD-DVD/Blue Ray comes around. It connects via HDMI - there is new version of the 850 just come out called the 860 which can be had for about £70-£80.

Dont expect a massive jump though - and please keep in mind that most HDTV's upscale anyway whatever you feed it - some do it better than others and some do it better than upscaling DVD players.

i was using a high end Sony DVD recorder on my 32" samsung LCD and the picture was poor, then i tried my XBox 360 and the picture was amazing so I wonder whether using that with the component cable and it outputing in 720p means that my dvd was upscaled using that?

The PS2 dd player was rubbish but the one in the 360 seems pretty decent.

Think the Samsungs are know for being poor via Scart - 360 looks good via component for DVD's but my 950 via HDMI looks hell of a lot better - you can make the 950/850 region free and can change the settings to NTSC or PAL.

ive not actually got it set up yet, doing some work to my flat b4 moving in, the one i saw on ebay was the HD850, so is there a noticable difference from a normal dvd then? does it get rid of the grainyness?

where is the best place to get one for the sake of 90 quid ill prob just get one as up until now i just use the pacific one from asda as it plays all dvdr no problem which leads me to my next question, do these upscaling ones play dvdr ok?

thanks for the advice men, appreciated ;)

there is a noticable difference between them yes. if you have friends on dvd, playing the first series with a normal dvd will look sh*t but will improve about 50% with the upscaling player. other dvds improve about 20 to 30% ,it will remove the grainyness, buy a good hdmi cable, you can pick decents ones up on ebay like QED or Monster. they will play dvdr no problem.

i dont know anything about HD so im just curious, i just bought this samsung tv...

http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/455_320528.html

(not from there)

and tbh im not really impressed with the picture quality when playing a normal dvd, its quite grainy...

is there any way of improving the quality eg. the above?

thanks

oooooh, i was going to buy this tv, it cant be that bad, the guy on the samsung advert sold his world cup tickets just for this tv ;)

Lol, he was just stupid!

I'm still learning all this HD nonense as well, buying a HD ready TV in a couple weeks, and then will upgrade my DVD player, etc in time....

infact, talking about that advert, thats the tv im going to buy in a month or so, looks really nice, the 32" version :)

  BMW E46 330i Touring
Yeah, it's one of a few I'm looking into. Also worth considering the Tosh 32WLT66, Sharp LC-32P50E and Panasonic TX-32LXD500...

But, back to topic...

I got that R74 Samsung from Costco. Amazing quality picture - downside is it makes normal freeview look a bit compressed close-up. The sound is absolute shite so make sure you've got another home cinema setup to use.

Btw, Costco is £820 with a 3 year warranty. Most of the online offers are 1yr.

So is it worth getting an upscaling DVD plaer now, or just waiting until Blueray is commonplace, playing genuine HD?

i think im gonna go for one of the samsung ones either the 850 or 950

when i was trying my tv out i was just using scart which im learning is prob the last way youd connect dvd to lcd... would the dvd picture improve much with an s video cable connecting the 2?

thanks

if you are planning on getting blu-ray then these players will not player original dvds or upscale them, you would need to buy an hd dvd player or an upscaling dvd as well, blu-ray is going to be up against it imo.

Tiger you will see some improvement through s-video but can you not use component?

I know an upscaled DVD player wouldn't play HD DVD's, but was just wondering whether it would be worth getting one now if Blueray will be released soon.

But looking around, it seems I don't need to worry about Blueray too much, may upscale my DVD player at the same time as my TV, so I can watch DVD's through HDMI and get the improved quality...

my wee pissy asda dvd doesnt have have component connections, i take it if i get the samsung upscaling dvd player i would connect it via HDMI? then the dvd or tv to my receiver via optical for the audio?

im slowly picking this up lol...

got the same reciever, only bad thing about the reciever is it doesn't have an hdmi connection on it, basically though try connecting the hdmi to the tv and taking the fibre optical out or coxial to reciever, turn volume off on tv and your set. speakers should be a piece of piss, do you have speaker wire?

  BMW E46 330i Touring
I initially plan to just run my TV / DVD player through my standard stereo amp to my Gale speakers... not home cinema quality but it's plenty good enough for my small lounge.

only got the speaker cables that came with the acoustimass, so should i connect the dvd and tv using the HDMI? is there any difference between using the optical to connect from the tv to the receiver rather than the receiver to the dvd? except being able to have surround on normal tv, which i dont really want....

  Focus ST-2
don't think there would be that much difference, i just connect my dvd to the reciever but i think connecting the tv would just have the same affect. yeah hdmi from dvd to tv

My setup goes:

LE32R74

Samsung 950 connected via HDMI to TV and the coxial Digital connected to Sony HTSS AV Reciever for Dolby Digital and DTS.

Xbox 360 connected via component to TV - optical out connected to my AV Reciver for Dolby Digital.

Sky Box connected to RGB Scart and audio out connected to my AV Reciever analog input - using Dolby pro logic II.

I'm very very happy with this set up and sounds fanastic.
