Hd - Wtf ?

right, im confused

my dad is lookin at new tv's and we are probably getting one after xmas

but, all this HD ready talk, there seems to be a few different meanings to what HD ready actually is

can anyone shed any light so i know what im talking about whilst arguing with the people in Comet etc..

HD is high definition.

Buying a HD TV will NOT give you a better picture quality UNLESS you get either Sky HD or Telewest HD, and even then its only the HD channels with are in HD. Sky HD does give you a slightly better picture on mornal channels, but it depends on ure tv to whther ull notice that.

In theory its not worth buyin a tv that is not HD ready now.

HD Ready is 1/2 HD. HD Ready TVs are not actually true HD TVs (which you can't buy anyway), but you won't need to worry about that for a good few years to come - unless you plan on moving to Japan.

"HD Compatable" tellys wont work in a few years, thats just marketing spin. Buy a branded HD Ready, with the logo

whats the difference between HD ready and HD compatible

is there anything on the back i should be looking for ?.........we want something thats proper HD not something that isnt going to work in a few years.........???

HD ready is a screen which will display HD broadcasts at 720p, 1080i or 1080p. Lookk for HDMI sockets too.

If it can't do these, its not HD ready. Simple!

I'm willing to bet it will be one heck of a lot longer than "a few years"

Digital roll-out isn't even scheduled to finish until 2012.

Been looking into all this HD stuff recently, bought several home cinema, hi-fi mags from whsmiths and theres loads of niggling issues with the whole HD, LCD, HD-DVD & Blu-Ray stuff, tbh I think it's all bollox at the moment

Most LCD TV's at the moment don't support 1080p
Majority only have 1 HDMI connection
Most don't support HDMI v1.3
No A/V receivers/amps support HDMI v1.3
Sky HD doesn't even support 1080p, only 1080i
1st gen Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players don't fully support Dolby HD or DTS-HD
1st titles available only support Dolby Digital 5.1 & DTS
Blu-Ray uses MPeg2 at the moment

The list could go on

It's all bollox imho, I'm sticking with CRT & trusty DVD for at least another year

hdmi 1.3 isnt an issue

alot more 1080p lcd's that plasma (mine comes tuesday for the bargain price of 989)

1 hdmi isnt a problem with a hdmi ready av amp
1080i is of more use just now than 1080p for the majority (they can change to 1080p if they want later)

there is NOTHING wrong with DTS!!!!
blue ray doesnt just use mpeg 2 at the moment so there it uses avc and vc1 aswell
