So, my current hard drive is on it's way out. Windows 7 has been released. Perfect timing.

Is it worth getting a Solid State Drive at this point bearing in mind the cost is much more substantial than a standard SATA drive. I'd be using it primarily as my OS boot drive and for a certain few programs such as Photoshop/Illustrator (already having another drive for storage/other programs).

Or shall I save the extra £100 and just go for another SATA drive, such as... http://www.ebuyer.com/product/124228 ; put the SSD upgrade off for a year or so.

If I was buying now I would go SSD. That's what I plan to put in my system within the next few months. SSD's work a treat with Win7

+1 The technology hasn't matured yet - Still issues with memory blocks etc after long time use.

The WD Caviar Black drives are the enthusiast ones, Caviar Blue are for non-enthusiasts...

I bought a 1TB Caviar black about 2-3months ago, and have found my lower-spec'd system (with the Caviar Black in) boots quicker than my gaming rig with a Samsung F1 1TB in...

Non SSD = WD Caviar Black Editions.. I run a file server at home with a load of these in it.. flawless

But I would buy SSD having just got a Dell E6500 with SSD.. what a difference it makes and as posted before Dell SSD's are about middle of the range speed wise. Infact my Dell mini 9 is running an SSD too lol.. so ye.. SSD FTW !

Taking all into account, I bought the 640Gb Caviar Black from Scan. SSD next year

i got a gskill ssd, windows 7 64bit and 8g of ram i can't tell you howquick it is, those saying wait for ssd haven't tried it, it's awesome if you can afford it
