Head unit output

I s it possible to bridge the outputs from the head unit? ie can you wire it up so that instead of 4 x 40 outputs i you could have 2 x 80?

i got a m8 who deals with stereos alot and he said it aint a good idea coz it merges the signals or sumut.? the easy way around it is to get a cheap 2 channel amp eg 2x80...
