Head Unit to work with 172 CD Changer?

  BMW E46 330i Touring
Apologies if this has been asked before, but are there any Head Units around that will be compatible with the standard 172 Alpine CD Changer?

I don't want to deviate from standard too much, but the cassette Head Unit just isn't powerful enough!

Lol, very true guys... will have a browse around for a cheap mp3 HU that doesn't look too out of place. :)

Any ones in particular that'll do a decent job? I don't want to spend a load of money as I've kind of out grown my big ICE days. Alpine have always been good for me so will happily stick with them...

... but I'm also toying with the idea of getting an Ipod Nano with an iTrip and then having even more songs to choose from, albeit not looking as good.

What do people think / recommend?

alpine CDA-9853R, backlight colour changed to the same as the Renault Orange (256 different choices), with stalk/display adapter.

So the display and stalk work ok with alpine then? I have a 9835r and haven't tried to install yet. Will the disc changer work with an alpine disc changer if it's factory fitted? It's a 11/2000 172. If it won't all work then I'll just keep the standard one.

the factory fitted disc changer wont work with the new headunit that you have. If thats what your asking. You would have to buy a another alpine disc changer to work with the new headunit i think.

you used to be able to get something to make the 172 changer work with an aftermarket head unit. I got one from halfords for my pioneer head unit. It wasnt cheap, cant remember exactly about £40 - 50 and was a pain to fit cos there is little to no room behind the head unit so your prob better going for an mp3 head unit
