Headwork

I know there have been posts before but not found the answers I want so...

I have bought myself a spare head which is in excellent condition. I want to have full headwork + cams but not sure where to go?

Can anyone recommend? - Hillpower, Ktec, GDI (Andy seems like a top bloke) BB, others?

I know prices tend to be very similar so thats why I would rather go on a recomendation.

So whos got good gains from somewhere?

back on topic: would it jus be a case of rubbin it down on the inside of the head making everything smooth and get all the deposits etc off? guessin theres more to it as people charge stupid amounts

i think its pretty obvious by now im gonna sing the praises of Andy at GDI as he takes great care in his work and knows what he is talking about, and as you said above he is a top bloke

id ring him for an estimate on price im sure he can match or beat any of the other tuners and do just as good a job or better

ive got a fully modified head on my GTT engine, spec as follows

GDI Gasflowed stage 3 Head Inc:

· Reworked combustion chambers

· 3 angle valve seats

· Gasflowed and Ported inlet and exhaust ports

· Flowbench tested

· Matched and Gasflowed manifolds

· Chemically cleaned

GDI reworked rocker assembly (Quietens tappets with performance cam)



ive also got a Piper 285 cam with uprated valve springs which Andy did.......

There isnt a lot to do to the squish part of the head, just clean it and grind in the valves. Most of on the headwork is done by porting and machine the inlet/exhaust inlet runners.. short turn radius etc afaik

we charge £495 for a 16valve gasflowed head and matched manifolds.

chemical clean as well and new stem seals, as above similar to bruns spec..

the head is flowbenched as well....

does the finish effect the flow? i was under the impression that a mirror type finish would have worse flow than a slightly rougher finish. also flat back valves? a was going to have a go myself a while back, but i found so much different information that i just got confused and didnt bother!

i wouldnt bother attempting to port and polish a head urself if u dont know how! its not as simple as mentioned above! BenR will tell u all u need to know!

Getting small flow gains yourself isnt hard and is jsut basic detailing of the port shape. But you wont really gain much from the F7P with detailing as the port isnt as such a good shape , btu just so soddingly large that you dont want to remove anymore material if you dont know where to remove it from.

If you want any significant gains they can be had DIY but youll wreck a fair few heads learning and need a good 6 months to a year to end up with any real clue as to why you are doing what your doing.....knowing what to do isnt the hard part, understanding why is.

Finish becomes inportant when were pushing the finite boundaries of that particular port, fueling whether carbed or injected can affect finish as does port length and if its inlet or exhaust. Typically a rough finish is better all round for reasons i dont need to go into.

Specific tools are needed to get the job done properly and to an acceptable level. Wit so many people claiming to do good headwork and then you actually see their work, its a right big con and choosing from the back of a mag is a lattery at best.

PM me and ill supply you with full details of my work, suffice to say i do ALOT for the money. One thing i do that most dont is remove the valve guides as you just cant do a proper port shape with them in, i replace them with new hardened phosphor bronze guides custom made and reprofiled.

Ben do you replace Hydralic lifter when doing your heads? can you get 16 cheaper then the normal £180ish i have seen them for? otherwise thats a good properotion of the cost

I dont replace followers unless its needed and its not included in the price. ALthough reconditionning can be done for as near a good result.

Followers are around that price yea.
