Hello from Wolverhampton

Q

Qube

Hi All,
I am Tom - a Wolvo-er!

Recently got myself an Albi Blue 197. No mods yet, just removed the RS stickers as I wasn't a big fan. Have myself a huge shopping list already but I am a bit of a nooby to car modding, so expect to see me around, asking my fair share of questions. :)

Here are the plans / shopping list for the car:

Lowered on H&R Springs, most likely - maybe 35mm all around
Cup dampers
Brembo brake package
Some nice sticky tyres
Some light wheels
Some racing seats and a harness set
A ITG panel filter
A miltek or other decent exhaust system (hopefully a decat, if I can find a nice MOT garage...)
An induction kit from Ktec
Improved cams
A remap following all this
Official renault carbon skirts, splitter and spoiler
Some official carbon badges
Carbon wrapped diffuser

I'd be happy if it was 200 WHP by the end of all this... :D

See you around guys!

Welcome mate plans sound good will keep an eye out for ya ;)
not many Albi's around here, Only robs

In all honesty I wouldnt bother with most of those mods.

Exhaust and de-cat will cause a huge flat spot that imo you cant map out on standard ECU.

Induction kit will lose power unless relocating battery to get more room for a proper setup. Of cause you dont need a panel filter AND an indcution kit and a anlfilter is a waste of time as wont gain anything, only thing it gains is it doesnt need replacing, but it will cost you 4 years of paperfilters to buy one...

Wouldnt get harnesses without a roll cage.

Your car should already have brembos, so not sure what you mean by this? Unless you mean new pads and discs?

Cams wont gain you a huge lot and may lose some power/driveability at low end, which is the last thing a 197 needs.

Suspension I'd look at Eibach prolines or sportlines with either cup dampers or Koni yellows, or Coilovers?

If you want to get more power out of it then have a word with Matt at Tour-de-force, they have built some truly epic 197s including 24 hour endurance race winning cup cars!

Styling mods all sound alright though.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!

That's quite insightful, duck. A lot of it makes sense but I have a couple of Q's...

Why no harnesses without a roll cage?

Does the standard 197 have Brembo brakes? I did not know this, if so. They weren't painted red, so I assumed otherwise.... So they're deffo Brembo, yeah?

Thanks for the sound advice.

Yeah same brakes as the red brembos but just not painted red as you havent got cup pack. Breaks should feel really very good, if they feel a bit soft, then you probably need new pads and discs. For these speak to Fred @ BTM Performance in Birmingham.

As for harnesses, you cant duck in harnesses, and a cage will prevent roof collapse. Its a big if but and maybe, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Ah man. Well there's a few £££ saved, cheers!

I've beard about BTM and this Fred fella, sounds like a top bloke. :D

Harnesses makes perfect sense in that case. Don't really want a roll cage. :|

What did you mean by "flat spot" earlier? Like, a power plateau?

Flat spot is where there is a dip in power. Is a pain because its around 2500 revs, and so cruising speed, put foot down and nothing.

Q

Qube

Ah okay... So this will be a result of most exhaust upgrades? It's not really an upgrade if that's the case... Then why do people bother?

'Coz its cool innit.

TBH I didnt heed the warnings and did it anyway and it annoyed me lots. If you go all out, and get a proper built engine then sure its worth it, but for just a bit more noise its not.

Hi Fred! I don't think I fancy spending 5k on something that didn't cost me too much more, haha... Perhaps I wont be getting 200 RWHP then haha.

Cheers Duck - excellent advice that will no doubt save me a few quid.

Mr Duck you've just killed this poor fella's dreams.

Speak to Fred about ANYTHING you want to do to you're car, call him dont PM ;). He'll tell you thats crap dont do it, or yeah it's ok not really worth the money or yeah really go for it.

Sound bloke and will not tell you that an air filter will see 15bhp gains like some websites claim.

Look out for me, PB 172 ;) I'm alway in and around Wolvo! mostly sedgley though.

Welcome mate, I'm just around the corner in Cannock. I used a have a red 197 with black wheels, rear cage, ITG filter, remapped and stripped out with coilovers. You may have seen me about. I'd recommend getting KW coilovers if you can, best mod I spent money on!
