HELP!! 16V DEAD

  Revels Mum & Sister

Just pulled up down the trading estate. The car started idling a bit high and was a bit lumpy.

Stopped the car went in for a bit and came out to give someone a jump start. Went to turn the engine over and it spluttered into life and died. But makes a Horrible tapping noise. Tryed starting again and does the same and dies

Sounds like either the Cam, Cam follower or Cam belt has snapped/broken.

Anyone got any idea what the f**k has happened!!! Need some suggestions. I am covered by a 6 month warranty. Just!!!

BEnR all you people good with mechanics anyy idea what it may be?

sounds very nasty. Unfortunately i wouldnt know what caused but dont try starting the car again as it could do more damage.

I wont start the car anymore. All I can say is thank f**k I wasnt driving at the time

Hope I havent done too much damage. How much does a 16V lump without Box, Loom and ECU cost?? Anyone know or got one for sale in good condition. Dont mind paying!!

hold on for a sec - you dont know whats gone yet! you might have been lucky in that you might not have done much damage.

if you turn the engine SLOWLY by hand using a socket on the crankshaft pulley, i think you would be able to feel if there was any contact being made between valve and piston, which would indicate snapped belt?

Ok what sort of damage would occur if a follower or cam has broken snapped?

if the engine wasnt running for long like a second!

if the belt snapped, the bottom ned would turn over and GRIND the open valves to a pump....and would get stuck....turn no more....

It woudnt start at all.

If you can, take the cam cover off, take the pugs out and check the end of the pug for damage as snapped valves will bounce around in the combustion chamber....damaging everthing.

Have a look at the belt!!!

But if the cam snapped, you would stop dead, not idling high......it would grumble and stop.

BenR

The car when started the one time. Made a very loud tapping noise. Then it did splutter grumble and then stop!!

If the cam has snapped. What would it be likely to damage. If this is bad. Would it be more cost effective to just replace the engine??

Could a follower have broken come away? Anything else it could have been?

Will take the cam cover off tomm and see whats what!

if the cambelt snapped......

think of lots of mashed metal in the engine.....

valves them selves.......well be smashed as will pistons etc etc....

damage can vary depending on the speed at which it stopped.....best have a look at the belt and take the plugs off...

Well it wasnt tapping when I stopped.

Only done that when I went to start the car again and drive off!

But obviously as soon as it made the noise. It spluttered and died

Started once more and and then died again!!

So if it is f**ked then cheaper to buy a new lump!!!

if its truely funked then maybe...but find out what the problem is....doesnt sound like a major rebuld maybe a bent valve...check it tomorrow.

Take the plugs out, check the cambelt, take the rocker cover off and look at the cams and lifters, just to see any damage, marking or scarring.

Right Ok mate

How much would I be looking at for replacing a Valve! What sort of labour charge as I dont wanna be ripped off. Plus I am a student but want to get the job done properly without breaking the bank more than is Necessary. If they dont cough up on warranty!

Any idea why this may have happened! I have thrashed the car!

Will do the above tomm!!

Cheers for the help mate!

i would charge about 60 to replace the valve, but you will need to take the head off and get it put back on.......drain the oil and water...etc etc...its a bit of work to take the head off.

It all depends on the damage mate....

No probs...keep us informed mate.....

My cam belt tensioner seized causing the cam belt to snap a few months back. I was doin 5mph and the car just stopped and wouldnt even turn over. I bought a complete 16v head for £45 and iv had the bottom end rebuilt for peice of mind. Thought it would be nice to get it all lightned and balanced in the process :)

Anyway I was hardly moving when it happened and when my head was off, about 9 valves were fuked and my pistons were bruised. Luckily this is still as it was on his garage floor and the other head which has been reconditioned etc was put straight on. Cost me about £1800 but that inc gasflowed head, fast road cams, verniers, balanced and rebuilt engine, uprated clutch, gearbox rebuild, fitting etc etc. It would have cost me probably almost half that to repair the damage in the first place. But now im hoping its going to be almost as good as a new engine.

If youve got the cash it might be the best opportunity to get some engine modding done whilst its in bits.

Took it to the garage today.

They are going to have a look at it monday and let me know.

Bloke who works there used to be on the 205 Rally team as a mechanic so trust him with my car.

Cant afford to get bits like that done mate. Have to see what the damage is and go for there. If it is loads, will try and get hold of a low mileage reconditioned engine!!

Anyone else know where I am likely to find a low mileage lump??

Anyone got one for sale. Cheers for the Offer Coolspot but 110,000 miles is a bit too much mate!!
