Help diagnosing problem- engine

Well guys need help with this one. Driving home earlier a random noise started when any load was put on the accelerator.

Sounded very tinny/rattly and the engine would bog down, back to normal though on lift off and the noise disappears.

No dash lights and I just presumed the exhaust had come loose so drove on at 40mph for another mile when the engine totally conked out and I pulled in.

Tried turning over once and it sounded funny, like it was turning over too easy. More like a motor spinning.
Doesn't sound good anyway, going to check the cambelt when I get home but any other suggestions to check so far?

Ok finally got it towed to the garage and the battery charged overnight from dying on the way home. Tried to start it up and it turned and started on which sounded like 1/2 a cylinder if that was even possible then died..... strange. Wouldn't start up again on a second try so left it.

I guess that can rule out the cambelt? but i'll look later anyway

Sounds very odd.

when you say tinny rattly, is that describing the combustion or a metallic sound?

My only thoughts at the moment is if something has come loose that can effect the spark timing that could explain a rattle and sudden bogging down of the engine. For example when i used to have a little original mini was alot more simple but if the vacuum advance tube came off the engine bogged down now end as the spark could not advance with engine speed.

Sounded metal on metal and the best way to describe it would be if the manifold came loose and was banging off the heatshield, but only when pressing the acc pedal. Coming off it at any revs and the noise went away.

If the engine started to misfire, then it is possible that the engine would have been vibrating moving about out of balance. This could cause it to knock against heat shield. Did you notice at all the gear stick moving around vibrating considerably when using throttle?

When the engine started to bog down did it sound like it was miss firing on some cylinders or just loosing power overall?

It definately wasnt the manifold making the noise, possibility the noise could have been coming from the engine itself.

Powerloss was similar to that of a lambda problem.

Driving with minimal acceleration was as normal, until the engine stopped dead. Its the way its trying to turn over thats the most worrying

sounds very odd indeed.

I dont think it will be the cam belt if that had gone you would not have been able to drive it at all.

As its not starting very well I would just try to get to the bottom of that first.

there should be Fuel , spark , compression and the correct timing of injection, spark and valves. if all them correct it should start.
I would just go through each and try find out what is not doing what it is supposed to do. I would start with anything electrical with the wet cold weather. Make sure connections are all ok, plugs not damaged, earths not resistive etc . Then ignition circuit , Fuel injection, then compression, then timing.

I just had a problem with misfiring on mine. I went chucking money at new parts way to soon . Just best spend plenty time trying to tie down where the fault is. Normally i find its more simple then what I first think or worry about.

going through that should come across something.
