help fitting a new timing belt

  Clio Biarritz, mk1 1998
hi, i drive a mk1 clio 1.2 and im replacing the timing belt,

do the white lines on the belt really have to match up with the lines on the cogs? cause its very tight getting them to match with the belt.

i could not tell if the last belt lined up as it broke while i was driving! -hopefully the engines not buggered!

thanks david

  Dodgy one
If the engines an interference engine yes it will tap like fook, If not no it doesnt matter if the lines match up as long as you have timed it all up correctly

it will have bent valves i expect. if the cambelt snapped.
you have to retime the engine this might be why you cant get the belt on the arrows have to run clockwise too.
