Help & Information Needed! - Engine Rattle - Video Inside

  RB 182
Hi Guys,

So currently i'm away in Nottingham over the New Year Period.

I went to fill my water up after i've got a strange fishy smell inside my car (no joke), and i read somewhere online it can be down to stagnent water or smelly air con pipes (INFORMATION WOULD BE APPRECIATED ON THIS TOO! - THE SMELL IS STILL THERE, ha) and i noticed that my engine was a little rattley.

I've had the car for 3 months or so now, and the previous owner said the belts had been done - i have a receipt/invoice for the belts etc but not for the fitting. I took his word that they'd been done, as nobody would normally buy the belts but not do them.. and with him being a car fanatic, i assumed he would never touch it unless they'd been done (i know him).

Nobody has ever mentioned anything about the engine noise, because to be honest, it doens't make any noise when the bonnets down but when i lifted the bonnet to fill the water, i noticed it sounded.. odd.

So like any normal CS member, i video'd it and sent it to Feirny. he suggested i should stick it up on here and get opinions on it.

What comes to my mind is, that one of the belts/pulleys is slipping due to the belts not being fitted by a specialist.

The video is below (sorry for it being short & badly shot), so if anyone has any information on either problems im currently facing, i'd be very grateful :)

Thanks in advance,

Siddle

Are you losing coolant? Does the smell in the car have a slightly sweet odour? If it does it could be a leaky heater matrix or heater pipe in the car. Check the carpets in the front and see if they are damp. The rattle might be a dephaser pulley bearing or one of the other bearings on one of the pulleys.

appreciate the replies back boys.

i'll be looking at it at some point this weekend, as i'm back at work tomorrow and FAR too rough to get out of bed now, ha.

any more pointers on the odor? i've been told to check the carpets, but i've also been told a water leak is really hard to find in most cases.

are there any common spots to check in 172/182's?
