You can probably fit it yourself, but if its as much fun as the speedo and clutch cables make sure you have a good few hours of daylight spare :(

Not sure if i had the same problem as you Brun, but it turned out mine was due to the cold idle sensor on the bottom of my 16valve lump, but i dont know if your engine will have one of these. If it is that, i got the part from Renault and fitted by my local Lex Autocentre for just over £40.
Like coolspot says, if it is the cable, have fun!!

Let me know how you get on with it mate as mines running rough as fcuk on idle at the moment, it needs sortin soon cos its pissin me off!

well ive replaced the coolant temp sensor, and the lambda so far, and it turned out to be neither of those but the car seems to have appreciated it so i can live with the expense

problem is really buggin me though as ive had a diagnostic on it and the garage couldnt find any problems

Same here Brun, ive had loads of people look at it, including Renault and no-one seems to know what it is! :(

Tom how exactly does your car act ?

have you tried anythin yet to fix it ?

with the 16v the first thing i would do but be to remove, clean, and re-fit the ISCV, this is the usual culprit and obviously cleaning it is free, my car doesnt have one of these grrrrrr

no, but we have a an idle speed control motor....but i guess you have been dealing with that too.

Whenever I start it, when it is cold, it tries idling at about 5-600RPM then picks up to over 1000RPM before dropping again. A few times its also idled (when warm) at about 1400RPM! This doesnt last for long and has only happened about 3 times in the last 3months, whereas the idle problem is every time! Anyway, what Ive done so far:-

1) Replaced Coolent Temp. Sensor (No difference)

2) Replaced Oxygen Sensor (Needed doing but didnt fix the problem)

3) Cleaned ISCV (No difference)

when mine starts up from cold its idles at the 1000rpm mark and soon as it warms a bit goes to 8000rpm only time it drops is if im in neatral and u stamp on accelrator then for a split second revs drop to 6000rpm but then straight back to 8000rpm.

guess i dont have same prob as u or do i ??

it should never go below 750 really

yea i know about the idle motor Ben, i had a new one put on in Feb last year, if the speedo cable doesnt fix it i think ill try a new motor, though there is something in the haynes about setting it up, so im gonna try that first and also check my MAP sensor vacuum hose

Tom if i was you id go for the speedo cable, i now think its gonna be about £15-£20 which is a lot more affordable

This is me just being thick and knowing nothing about cars but how will a speedo cable affect the engine, I thought it was just connected to the speedo & gearbox!

The speedo cable has an electronic sensor built into the top near the speedo head. This sends road speed info to the injection computer. Basically, it prevents the engine from stalling when the vehicle is moving. If this sensor should stop working the following symtoms should be present.

1. The car will start and idle normally.

2. If after a short journey and the vehicle comes to rest, the idle speed may be as high as 2000 rpm.

3. If you turn the engine off, re-start and it idles normally, until you have travelled some distance again, then the speedo cable is at fault.

If however, you just have a bad idling problem without high RPM when stationary, it COULD be a faulty throttle potentiometer or just be incorrectly adjusted. This would lead to the enging "HUNTING", ossicaltion of the idle speed between 500/1000 rpm.

A new speedo cable is £68.50 + VAT from your Renault dealer.

Hope that helps.

my cable was only 42 plus the vat i got it today from davies of sevenoaks iv got probs too when slowing down the revs wont drop below 2000rpm until iam at a standstill. if you find your local renault dealer is alot dearer brun let me know ill sort you out a number of davies

Looks like I need a new speedo cable, hope it will fix it!

Where the best (i.e.cheapest) place to get one from?

On reading all this again, I dont think it is the speedo cable but maybe a faulty or incorrectly adjusted throttle potentiometer.

What does this sound like chaps?? When car is being driven and ive hit the brakes my revs will either rise and then drop down or will stall. This has only happened a few times but then other times its fine????

ROB.

mine never idles high, only low, could this still not be the speedo cable ?

as surely if its faulty it could go both ways

right, yesterday i give my car some stick, i was doin 90 for the majority of half an hour (private roads)

the car seems to be behavin itself now, its playin ball, not 100%, but a lot lot better, i think its possible due to the increased heat in the bay i may have dried somethin up, like some water on an electrical connection or somethin

its drivin like ive told it off for being naughty and its now behavin itself

is there any electrical connections prone to water/dampness that i can check out and give a goin over with WD40 ?

i think this is very possibly the problem, water/damp, as the problem seems to be there constantly when its wet out, especially when its pissin it down really hard

Well I went into Renault today to ask them their thought on what might be causing the problem and its going in on saturday for the potentiometer to be adjusted.

Strange thing is, its behaving itself at the moment, maybe its the freezing weather?

Brun, I cant comment on your car, but after Ive given mine a good blasting, then park up for an hour or so (on a dry day) letting the engine go cold, the problem is still there, but just for a very short time! I dont think water/damp has anything to do with my problem, but then we might not have the same problem!?

well mate, im not tellin u my car is ok at the moment, im not gonna even mention my problem, in any tense, past or present, understand hehe ?

iv had loadsa sh*t with my valver. put a new speedo cable on ,no difference. when depressing the clutch the revs wont drop below 1500 is this norm????????/ . haveyou guys with valvers tried cleaning the idle control valve????????? its bolted on the plenum chamber undo the two pipes and clean with carb cleaner. by the way wen i start mine from cold it sounds very rough like its running on 3 cylinders any ideas, this will last 4 usally 15 to 30 seconds, then its fine please help

BRUN, maybe you just have crap in your injectors? By giving the car a good thrash it has cleaned them out. When my old Nova was displaying exaclty the same problem I emptied have a ton of redex and injector cleaner into it. It smoked like me on a bad day for about 2 hrs and ran perfect after that (even a little cleaner). Strange thing was it always ran worse in the wet b4 that, never worked out why.

when i start mine up from cold it sounds like a diesel and really knocky,i done an oil change yesterday and filter and what a nitemere that was,the filter was terrible to change (16v),i put magnetec 10/40 in it and it dont sound much better intill warm, its done 100,000 miles now<i have only had the car 4 about 2 weeks, how long do these engines last? it has full service history, would it be the top end or bottom end?do i need a rebuild? i love this car any help would be great!! thanks!!!
