Help my gearbox is dead!!!

I've recently bought a Clio 182 and It turns out that the gearbox is knacered, it barely goes into first and local garage says it needs replacing

Is it worth getting someobody to rebuild it? We have a gearbox specialist in exeter close to my house so thought I may give them s shout but if its going to be more expensive and not actually worth it I may try and buy a decent 2nd hand gearbox off eBay or breakers.

Also do you know how many hours labour I should be looking at for whipping it out and putting a new 1?

what's it like getting into other gears? any noises? will it drive?

I'd just stick a second hand box in it, they're usually £150 in the for sale section.

Yeah it's pretty much fine apart from first but there is a lot of play in the box and I mean a lot. It's done 95k as far as I know

For the sake of £12 quid membership you'll save yourself a lot of money buying a box off here rather than ebay.

where is the play? in the shifter set up itself or actually in the box?

when you go for 1st lift the collar as though you're going for reverse but don't move the shifter over enough to get reverse and see if you get 1st easier that way. i've have a few where the white bush is shot and they are a pain to get some gears, generally 1st and reverse.
