help needed cd drive?

hey when i put a game disk into my drive the disk spins up and clicks alot but wont load the game up. when i go to my computer it doesnt reconise a disc in the drive. any ideas?

cds work fine. its dvd's some dvd films will work others wont?. im trying to run gtr2 atm. it sometimes freezes on the my computer screen and unfreeze as soon as i eject the disk

Yes, but if it wouldnt play another disc that might have been the reason.

Confused me when it happened to me at work a few weeks ago on a crappy bog standard Dell.

gtr2 wouldnt work full stop. rollercoaster tycoon 3 worked first time. test drive unlimited works when it wants

Drive could be on its way out.
I'd just buy another DVD drive. They only cost a few quid brand new and you can fit them in less than 2 minutes most of the time. There's plenty of guides on how to do it online if you can't work it out.

ive just switched to vista but i had the same problems while on xp and the same when im on windows 7

Age doesn't mean anything. Optical drives are a mass produced item, so it's inevitable some are going to break. It's the same with Renaults.... :quiet:

Has it got any remaining warranty? If so you might get the drive replaced for nowt.
