Help needed URGENTLY!

  Countryman JCW
I have a ph1 172 and took it into a garage today for new discs and pads all round.

I got quoted £140+VAT and thought this was reasonable so booked it in. I would have done it myself but i was told you have to replace ABS rings and bearings etc so decided to employ the services of a professional. If this isnt the case and its as simple as taking the discs off and putting new pads on i will do this myself so please advise lol!!

I got there and he said its £140+VAT for fronts only. He is going to have a look at it and tell me what it really needs as im not 100% sure.

What should i be paying for front and rear discs and pads fitted by a garage? and is this worth it? or can i do this myself

Any help will be very much appreciated!

You can get the Genuine Renault rear discs for around £110 (I think there was a deal on from one of the traders recently). They will have the bearing and ABS ring included.

I bought some discs which had neither, but I got the bearings seperately, had them pressed in and just re-used the ABS ring, although I think they are only £10 each.

For the fronts, Auto-nation sell the brembo High Carbon discs for a very good price

Also (as the garage will most likely only use 'OEM quality' parts), they also have some Ferodo pads for a decent price.

Front discs and pads will cost £86.24 (plus postage), and are a relatively easy job (depending on your previous experiences), but get them fitted at a garage if you are not confident.

I did all mine myself and it was relatively easy, there's a guide as well if you want to read that bafore deciding.

EDIT. They also sell rear discs for £100.

Rear pads are a good price as well.

Ok, so is it only the rears that need the bearings and rings? or fronts aswell?

How much do you think i should be quoted by the garage to get the lot done?

If i decided to get the discs and pads myself and fit them, where and how much would it cost to get them pressed etc.... would it then be a case of just fitting them? or is there extra work involved?

Anyone live in the midlands that knows a good place to get them done?

Bearings only for the rears and i'd just buy the genuine Renault rear discs. If you buy them like that, then all 4 are just direct replacements for what's there and no need for getting anything pressed.

I only had to get my bearings pressed as I bought them seperately.

Not sure how much a garage should be quoting for fitting, help yourself by ringing more than one garage.

Ok great, so how much am i looking at buying the discs/pads (standard OEM parts) all-round, all ready to go then? (i only have limited interent access as im at work, so cant search for them unfortunatley ), when buying the discs with ABS rings and Bearings fitted, do they just go straight on? or is it a bit more complicated than that?

Fitting the pads and discs is a piece of cake front and rear... You don't need to mess about with the ABS rings on either end of the car, standard OE rear discs come with bearings fitted, when removing the rears from the car you simply remove the ABS ring and put them onto the new discs.. There is a guide on the forum but you need to be a paid member to access this of course, for a time scale I'm moderate at doing things myself on my 172 and the front discs and pads took about 30mins for one side, seeing it was my first time replacing brakes on a Clio, and the other side 10mins, it is as easy as removing the wheel, two larger bolts holding the carries onto the hub, dropping the pads out, depressing the piston, slipping in the new pads with some copper grease, 1 torx screw holding the disc to the hub, pull that off and replace with a new one, reverse order for fitting and done.. the rears require the hub nut to be removed and the hole disc and bearing and ABS ring slips off, as above remove the ABS ring and place back onto the new disc and slip back on and redo the nut, requires a specific torque setting which I can't think of atm, obviously you need to remove the rear brake carries to remove the disc which is practically the same as the fronts.. This is a VERY rough out line of what you need to do.. if you feel confident you can do this yourself, get yourself a membership for this forum and take a look at the guides, there is a few excellent ones showing you the steps with pics.. It's really that easy.. Honest!

Ok this is great advice thanks alot, as im sure you can see its very much appreciated!

I used to be a paid member on here and found everyone on here really helpful last time, just never renewed. Will be renewing this evening after work definatley!

Im going to wait and see what the garage come back with today. Ive changed the front pads over on my clio before and that was easy, cant see the other bits being too hard, ive got a torque wrench so can do the job myself by the looks of things!

Thanx for your help again, il let you know how i get on!

If anyone else has any advice or knows a good place to buy the parts from, or what parts to get, please feel free to advise!
