HELP: Problem - Clunking from Steering Rack

J@Y

On my 182, I can hear a knocking/clunking as I go from lock to lock. I'm pretty sure it's coming from the rack. When I am manouvering into a parking space it becomes most noticable. I got someone to sit in an turn from lock to lock while I watched the rack and I could see that as I heard the noise, the gater on the rack seemed to jump, like it was catching on something until that point in its travel. Though I don't think that's the noise, the noise is more metallic/mechanical.

It has also started to happen occasionally under heavy braking, I can hear a loud clunk/bang.

I had the rack seperated from the subframe recently when I disconnected it from the subframe so I could remove the gearbox and one of the bolts sheared, however I replaced that and tightened it.

Can anyone please shed any light as to what to check for? It's really worrying me that I'm going to loose my steering mid corner and plough a mother and child or something!

Cheers, Jay

No it's deffo not them. Top mounts are on tight.

The noise is coming from lower down, seemingly the rack...

It seems the rack mounts to the subframe werent tight. Just tightened them right up and it seems to have stopped clunking!

Mustn't have tightened them up enough after removing it from the subframe when changing the box
