help reqd - dealer or private

hey guys my first time on these boards as considering buying a 172, what im after is a mk1 2000 or 2001 low mileage unmodified

question is - should i go with a renault dealer, pay the price and go for the 2 yr warrenty, AA etc or go private - cheaper, take the risk, maybe get an RAC inspection or something

pricewise i reckon the difference is about a grand - what are folks experiences of the renault dealerships in correcting faults etc, how much should i expect to go wrong on that car & what are the relative costs.. i drive loads of miles so quite tempted by the piece of mind to just chuck it back in at the dealer, pick up a courtesy car and jobs a good un.

all thoughts, help, experiences appreciated - will report back with what i decide and how it works out

thanks

I bought mine private no serious problems, i then went to see Renault about taking out a warranty, not really worth the paper it was written on.

The only thing that is likely to go wrong are wheel bearings. Apart from that i have had no major problems after 30000 miles.

Great car, Really good fun!! :D

i would go to dealer, in sorry but some of these 172 are plagued by major problems, like our old one, tony kl one blowing up,.

if u spent 10k on a reno ill got to dealer def

cheers guys - hopefully the dealer can do the biz by the weekend - 2000 W with only 12k on the clock & he wants a smidge over 10 grand for it

now..

wholl give me 7 for this very fine F2 coupe...

Heh, thanks Wongy. I too would go for a dealer car, mainly because there is one reason people buy these kind of cars and its not for shopping :D

Just to put you at rest, my engine was originally diagnosed as knackered (after only 2,500miles from new) but was later told it was an issue with the fuel injection and easily fixed.

Also, I believe people are picking up brand new mk2 imports for around the £11K mark (inc. cups) but if its the mk1 you want then that doesnt really help.

FFS just got off the phone to the dealer who seems to know v little about the renault2go sales patter i was getting off their head office yesterday - appears its only 6 month warrenty as standard, but extendable.. at a cost. theyre getting back to me.

cheers tony - yeah would pref a mk1 is nothing deeper than the look of the beast - would i be right in saying most folks feel this way? hopefully means the mk1 prices will hold
