  AB182, Audi A5 3.0
clio has just started making another new noise! bloody thing! its like a squeaking noise (like metal against metal), that goes squeek squeek squeek squeek in tiem with engine revs. also it only happens when the clutch is depressed, if i press the clutch the noise goes away....

thrust bearing? or something else?

is there any test that can be done to find this out without taking the hole thing apart?

Hi there,

My 97 clio does this as well, as does my friends 93. Ive been told its the thrust bearing, it only does it when its cold. Will know very soon though as I am having the clutch changed, so a knew bearing will put in and if it stops il let you know :)

cheers dan, how long has yours been doing it? just wondering if i should get it changed or will it be ok until the summer to do it?

oh and welcome to cliosport :)

My car has same problem, its the thrust bearing, does it when its cold and damp, if I hold the clutch fork on the front of the engine and move it slightly it stops.

I would say thrust bearing, they have a tendancy to go on clios. When did you last have the gearbox off or clutch done?

they can be noisy for years, but then they can also fail, making gear change impossible, i had a punto sporting that left me stranded one day, the bearing was in about 50 bits......

i changed the engine about a month ago, so the box was off then. it looked al ok at that time! the clutch/thrust bearing was new less than 2 years ago...its not even posible to look at the bearing is it, annoying! i notice the rubber on the top of my clutch fork is ripped, could this be the cause of failure? like waters got in there or something?

if it does go whats the worst that will happen? im not worryed about gear change, if you get the revs right you can change without clutching, that will be enougth to get me home.

1st is easy...you have to turn the engine off, then pop it in gear the start up again when you want to move ;)
